hey ya'll,

I'm conducting some research on the trail and was wondering if anyone could direct me to relevant statistics about thru-hikers. For instance, how many people attempt/finish a thru-hike, how many men, how many women, crime, etc.

Thanks for your help and keep truckin'.

thanks for your reply!

these are great stats on the ATC site, but I was wondering if there were sources external to the ATC that recorded stats as well. My research focuses on women specifically, and I was hoping to find some sort of data which could help me extrapolate the number of women who thru-hike.

any help is greatly appreciated.

Best info is still at the ATC website. Contact Laurie Potteiger, the Information Specialist and statistician if you need more data.

I was contacted last year about someone who was interviewing female hikers of a certain age for an article. I'm not sure how much information she ended up collecting.

I second the notion that Laurie Potteiger of the ATC will probably be your best resource.

I don't know if it has the specific type of information you are looking for, but this book has a lot of statistical data based on a questionnaire completed by numerous thru hikers.
