Just curious, does anyone have any outdoor related tattoos? I'm trying to think of what I should get. I'm considering a mountain scene on my shoulder blade with the moon and trees (kinda like a night time scene).

I got bored, stupid or whatever you call it when I was a teenager and made myself a very small tatoo of nothing on my left forearm. Really, it looked like doodling. About 10 years ago I spent $600.00 and 6 trips to Cape Giradeau, MO, 300 miles each way to have it removed with a laser. Best money I've ever spent was having it removed.

ive got a pair of footprints on the outside of my right calf. I got it because im into running, hiking, rock climbing and athletics all things that involve your feet. Use google images to get ideas. Ask people too. Also understand that some people will not agree with you...like the above. Not all people agree on all things. your parents will hate it. Girls love it. Oh and try and draw it on your body for a few weeks to see what its like. Good luck and enjoy. they are addictive.

I only have one tattoo currently and it's not outdoors related. It's a dragon claw holding a crystal egg on the back of my neck I would like to get an owl though when I complete my thru. My thought was an owl sitting on a tree branch maybe with room under the owl for the AT symbol and the year(s if I get ambitious). And I have two other pieces planned- a large fantasy-art style version of the tri-goddess Hecate on my upper arm and my favorite quote from Macbeth being written with a quill on my right forearm (but that one won't be done until I sell my first fiction novel as a memento). I just can't find an artist locally to do the Hecate piece quite the way I want it but I'll find someone eventually.

At Trail Days last year, I saw a guy that I had an AT map tattooed on his arm. He included all of West Virginia and had the WV logo from WVU in the middle of the state. Naturally, he was from there and said his trail name was Mountaineer.

I have several tats and regret none of them. save one colored tribal armband i got in highschool, they are all just straight up black wording or symbols. thats just what i like. I was thinking for myself after finishing my thru hike this year (God willing) of getting the AT symbol, or some variation of it, tattooed on one of my calves. very simple and distictful. and also hard to screw up. if your going for a whole "scene" id make damn sure i spent plenty of time finding a excellent artist, preferably with lots of work in the style your looking for. that sounds like a piece with alot more detail, thus more chances to be screwed up. Good luck in your search though, there are some VERY talented tattoo artist out there! Just dont let the price tag scare you...its a lifetime investment :D

Its the "new" official AT logo. Its 2 mountains with a sunrise behind. Check out www.appalachiantrai.org (http://www.appalachiantrai.org) , its the circle logo just adopted sometime in the last couple of years. I plan to add the year and mileage of my thru-hike, once I get the change to do it.

I think they are an individual choice just like how you choose to hike the trail. My tatoo looked amateurish at best, so it had to go.

I did see a cute girl a couple of years ago who had a spider web over all of her body parts that were exposed including her palms, except her face. I wanted to ask her where the spider was but wouldn't dare. She was sitting next to me on an airplane. We were total strangers.

Got this one on my calf about a year ago.

I researched a lot of shops. They did the other 3 as well. Today, tattoo artists are using better techniques and equipment. They don't turn out and wierd out. You MUST take care of it and apply sunscreen, a small price to pay for good art.

Thanks man. It was worth a little pain to keep the fire alive.

It's funny. I walked in with a sketchy sketch and it turned out better than I imagined. He changed it completely!

I've been giving this very subject a lot of thought lately.
I have 3 tats, get a new one every 10 years. They're all where my clients won't see them. I'm due for my next in 2011. Coincidentally, that will be the year of our thru. Naturally, I will be getting a map of the AT from my left ankle bone (to represent Springer mountain) to the knob at the base of my neck for Mt. Katahdin.
I had considered getting portions of it done while on the trail. I mentioned this to my son and the incredibly wise 14yo said, "Mom, you don't want to be hiking with a fresh tattoo. It'll be more pain and will probably get infected if we can't get a shower for a few days." Why is the teenager smarter than his mom?
Anyway, if you see anyone else with this tat, know they kiped the idea from me.

Best tat I have ever seen was on the right forearm of my Great Uncle Gump when I was a little kid. It was a big blue smear. At some family get together, I just walked up and asked him what it was. He started telling me about all of the ports he went into when he was in the US Navy during WWII. "This part says Manilla, that says Pearl harbor..., etc, etc". I didn't know until years later when my grandma (his sister) told me, but that was the first time he had talked about his service in decades. Was it a bad tattoo? Yep. Was it an awesome tatoo? Yep.
The true meaning of the ink is in the person that it is on, not the people who see it.

I've got three tattoos down my left arm, when I finish my thru-hike I'll use up some space on my right getting a celebration AT, outdoors-type tattoo.

The mountain scene sounds good. The only problem with a shoulder blade tattoo is that you won't ever see it. If you want something you can gaze at maybe pick another location. An elbow to shoulder cuff tattoo would look cool with a mountain design on it.

Always give thought to where you have the tattoo placed on your body. Both of mine are on my upper arms. When I had mine done the artist suggested that I keep them above the the cuff line of short sleeved dress shirt. That way if you are in a business situation then can be kept covered if necessary. I followed his advice.

A number of years later I worked for a trucking company in TN that required the drivers to wear uniform shirts. If the drivers had tattoos that were on the lower arm the had to wear long sleeved shirts - summertime included.

Tattoos are and should be considered like art. If you don't like it don't look at it.

If you get a tat using Vitamin E cream on it helps keep it new looking.

I prefer art work on canvas or paper. My favorite at the moment is a photo through a living room window I took that shows the first snow last month and the view over one of our small land trust preserves, and of two islands in the bay with the village church on the mainland.

The best thing about this kind of art is that it is easily replaced when my tastes change, or I take an even better photo, or see a nicer painting.

Skin is not a very good medium, I've found. It gets wrinkled, moles and blotches, and sometimes even worse imperfections appear. Worse still you can't remove the blemishes without damaging the tatoo.

It's my observation that good artists are rare and very few good artists use the skin as a canvass.

One of the best tattoo parlors is in Frederick MD - not too far off the AT if you can get a ride and have the time. It's Mark of the Spark. They are always very busy, though. I had to wait nearly 2 weeks for my appointment. You go in, set your appointment, give them a deposit, and then come back for your tatt. I think you have to set it up in person, not on the phone. Alfie and Margie are outstanding people and award winning artists.

let me clearly state i have nothing wrong with tattoos, and will always be respectful of someone's decision, no matter how gaudy or replicated. now, ive wanted a lot of different pieces of ink through my early years, including a John Bonham (led zep) symbol, others mostly involving bands. THANK THE LORD i never followed through.
maybe one day after my mom or dad passes aways, get something COMPLETELY ORIGINAL to memorialize them, in due time, of course.
But i have been reeling over an idea for one, that i think that i may never regret. the outline of the great state of Virginia, for whom i am so grateful she has blessed me with my love of the mountains and the sea and the trail and everything in between.
So yes, and outline of Virginia, including the easter shore, Tangier and Smith Islands. Dots of location upon the state which have personal affinity to myself, and, most importantly, the entire course in a red ink of the Trail.
so im 26 now, and if i were to ever get ink, that would be it.

is my suggestion/idea grandiose? absurd? unoriginal?

jeez, i hope i dont see someone at trail days with my tattoo now...

I waited 28 years to get a Tattoo I use to be a body piercer and was offered free tattoos from the artists. I wasn't sure what I wanted on my the rest of my life. After 4 trips on the A.T. I was sure. I had a small boot done in graywash on my wrist. It sayd "AT" and has the year I started mileage under it. The number and AT are in a dark and light green that meet to make a third shade in the middle of each. Now I live in Colorado, when I start Mileage on the CDT I'll get another boot with the CDT in it. Wether I finish any or all long trails, I don't regret remembering the steps I've taken to get as far as I've come, everytime I look at my wrist or someone asks what it means. I do suggest you think long and hard about it. I did. I'm glad. It's perfect. Good Luck.

I personally love tattoos. I feel a tattoo can be a form of art as therapy.

I only have one, it's of my own small design and in honor of my passed loved ones. I'll keep adding to it as life changes. It's really your own decision. It might sound odd, but I felt more 'me' after I had it done.

It took me over 40 yars to decide to get a tattoo, and now I have two involving celtic knotwork. I always tell people considering getting one to think about where they will be in the next 20-30 years. While something bizarre peaking out of your shirt collar can look really cool on the trail, consider what it will look like when you decide to play dress-up and go the the symphony in a dress or to your best friend's wedding. Mine are only visible when I am swimming. Also, you should always smear #50 sunscreen on any tattoos that are exposed to prevent them from looking like the green blurs that the old WW2 vets have on their forearms. A good tattoo artist usually charges over $100.00 an hour for their work, and as with many things, you get what you pay for. Be sure to look at the artist's portfolio. Asheville has a couple that I can recommend, but avoid the "instant tattoos, no waiting" type of shops in Cherokee and Gatlinburg where people get stuff that looks like it was done in jail by a meth head. Here is the one that I have on the front of my right thigh.http://www.stickergiant.com/imgs/125/b5266_125.gif

Tattoos are a totally personal choice on what to get. It should be something that means something to you or that really catches your eye. I am also thinking about getting a couple at one point but mine have to do with bicycling. As the reason for my name I love everything to do with biking whether it be pedal or motorcycling to me like hiking it means pure freedom. If you really want one don't let anyone put you down about it. Good luck with your search. As mentioned do a google search on it tons of ideas out there. Back when I went into the Service in 1958, right after boot camp my buddies and I all went out for tattoos in a very scuzzy tattoo parlor right across from the Marine Barracks at 8th and I St.s in DC. I got a big Rooster tattooed on my (then) six pack. Over the years it slowly faded out to the point today all that's left is the Rooster's a-hole in the middle of my stomach;) One of my buddies got a tat of a battleship in the same location. Whilst in the "Nam", he took a round to the gut. The ship sank and all he has left is the hole right in the middle of his gut;)

Ever see a one eared elephant?:D

I like that!

Do you know a thru-hiker about your age in Gorham named "Mahoosuc"?

Just curious, does anyone have any outdoor related tattoos? I'm trying to think of what I should get. I'm considering a mountain scene on my shoulder blade with the moon and trees (kinda like a night time scene).
Not exactly a scenic outdoors, but I have a tribal raven and a maori totem on my upper left arm.

I have always loved the jerkoff's who think it is their job to tell the world what they think of EVERYTHING...Even when it is not requested and obviously will not be appreciated. I have many tattoos, none of which can be seen unless I want them to be seen. I also got my tattoos well before it was cool to have them, I got them because I enjoy having them and if anyone has a problem with that I say SCREW YOU!!! Hike your own hike...Get your own Tattoo!!!

The one on my upper left arm is an "outdoor" scene. It is done in black only. It depicts a wolf, whose breath goes up into the air and forms the head of an Indian maiden whose hair than flows down and makes mountains with the moon rising behind them.

It was an idea I came up with and brought it to the only guy I would let work on me. His daughter took my rough idea and drew the pattern for her father (also an artist) to do the ink work.

My maternal grandfather had a distinctive wound from WW1 he never talked to anyone about until he sat down with me a few days before I went overseas. Thanks for bringing that memory back to me this afternoon. He was one helluva guy.

Well, having lived through several tattoo fads, and several periods when many of those who had gotten tattoos tried to get rid of them -- mostly unsuccessfully -- I like to suggest caution.

I could care less about whether you heed my suggestions or not. But I do feel better for having suggested them.

I've thought about getting an AT tat once all is said and done. Not sure about designs. But then if I opt to do the PCT and CDT at some point, that's a lot of ink dedicated to hiking.

I got these 2 last summer

Got this one on my calf about a year ago.

I researched a lot of shops. They did the other 3 as well. Today, tattoo artists are using better techniques and equipment. They don't turn out and wierd out. You MUST take care of it and apply sunscreen, a small price to pay for good art.
