I'm in. Tried to post an intro in the 2005 forum, but not sure what happened, it didn't show up???? I was positn under the "Welcome" thread, maybe that is not possible. I try to start a new thread.

Starting a new thread didn't work either... or not completely. The post showed up on the homepage's list of most recent discussions but I'm not seeing the new thread appear in the 2005 forum.

I just looked all through the actual forum software and I cannot find a 2005 forum. I think the problem is it isn't actually created yet.

I fixed the problem. I took a second to fix it before I left. Sorry about that. Rock, I have to grant you access to this forum. That is why you could not see it. If I don't get it done before I leave I will do it when I get back.

I still don't have access. I tried to change my access, but right now I am just a super-moderator instead of Admin, so I guess I don't have authorization to fix that. :o

My wife and I are planning on starting March 1, 2005.

Gravity Man and Tuffie GA-WV 2001
Waffle and Danger Pee GA-ME 2005!!!!

BTW for prospective thrus- definitely read Model-T's Walking on the Happy Side of Misery! We are so enthralled in the book right now. We read it to each other every night, and it really captures a good part of what thruhiking is about! As my wife said yesterday as we were lying in a field on our thermarests reading the afternoon away "I just want to hide in this book until our hike starts!"

Good luck to all of the 2005 thru-hikers. I picked up a copy of Model T's book from the author himself last weekend. Although I have yet to start reading it, Model T is a real gentlemen. If his book is anything like his personality, it'll be great.

2005 is my year. I'll be leaving in mid to late March. I look forward to hearing from and meeting other 2005 hikers. For me, the AT will be the adventure of a lifetime. I will be moving from the Adirondacks to Athens, Ohio this summer and hope to find new hiking adventures there. Is anyone familiar with that area?

I would like to start a northbound thru starting May 1st 2005, unfortunately it would probably be better to wait until 2006 for numerous reasons. Saying that I've never let a little thing like "sensibility" stand in my way and another year is a long wait...we'll see.

I am planning a 2005 hike too. I think I will quit my job on March 15th and hit the trail on April 1st. The start date isn't set in stone, I may leave earlier. I had actually planned to go in 2004 but thought it better if I waited a year. 2005 is going to be a great year. I can feel it. :jump :banana

Anyway, I hope to be starting in 2005, if I can save enough money and can keep away from the knee trouble that kept me from hiking it this year.

After much deliberation about whether to SOBO in 04' or NOBO in 05' I have decided to NOBO and run with the herds next year with a mid April start date. Now I just have to wait it out 11 months to leave. Can anyone say: "longest year ever". Oh well, I will get a fix for a week this summer then again for another week in October or November. Look forward to meeting all of you other prospective 05' hikers.

Yep-Gravity Man/Waffle & I are planning on starting March 1, 2005.
We can barely think of anything else. Although, we are very much looking forward to a little sobo on the Long Trail this summer. Going to see how far we can get in 2.5 weeks. It will at least tide us over till March, and give us an opportunity to fine tune gear, mental state & yogi'ing technique (that was a funny:).

I can hardly wait to meet some of you! Gravity man has been a regular on White Blaze, but I am a new-b: just registered today! But, I think it might be as I had feared, getting addicted already! The paper piles on my desk seems to be growing exponentially! In anycase, I love the idea of a 2005'er forum & having the chance to get to know some of you'all a little...

Anyway, I can't express how much I love the social & bonding aspect of the trail. Hopefully we'll meet up with some of you & find a connection!

OK, just gotta get through these last few minutes then I can go home & hide some more in Model-T's book:)

And hopefully with another deaf hiker joining me!

I hope you guys don't mind me adding my plans on your thread. I will not be through-hiking for quite a while. (Too much responsility at home; one-income family with wife who stays home with our ten month old.) But I definately want to section-hike next year. My wife is already encouraging me to take a week and get on the AT. Possilby I would hike through Smokey Mountain NP. I think that is the about where the trail is closest to me (Indianapolis). I would entertain any suggestions for five days on the AT.

I live near Atlanta and would enjoy the company.I'll be in North Carolina for a writers conference Halloween weekend and would like to get in a hike or two the following week. It needn't be the AT. I was thinking about the Foothills Trail in SC, the Benton MacKaye Trail in GA, and there is a trail in NC whose name escapes me, but it covers a lot of peaks.

I will probably spend a night with relatives in Barnesville which I think is close to Griffin.

If the finances work out, I'll be finishing this year's aborted thru in 2005. I'll do the sections I skipped (Hot Springs to just past Erwin, Watauga Dam to Damascus), go to trail days, then jump up to Catawba (where I left the trail) and continue north. At this time I don't have the desire to re-do the 556 miles I hiked this year, so I guess that makes me a section hiker.

:welcome Mana and I are going to be heading from Georgia in mid March. It looks like there is a good chance we will see most of you, but those leaving early will have to be missed. We are planning a 28 week hike for ample zero days and low mileage. We are interested in stopping a couple times to help out with an organized event such as feeding hikers and some trail maintenance. We have some interesting questions and could use some input from someone that knows the hostels and towns rather well along the way. I am sure we will be on the 2005 thread fairly often for the next six months and hope to get to know as many of you as we can before the hike.

It would be me, Sweet Clover from Michigan, Ursula Smith from Alabama, Kelly Orsi from Maryland, Vinny from Pennsylvania.

two of undeciding hikers are Justin Lambert from Arizona and Rosella Kelly of Pennsylvania.

As Sweet Clover and I have already discussing for the group trail name, but we thought about Gang of Crazy Hands. It will not be confirmed until we set our foot on Springer.

It was great to hear from you! Hope to have you join with us, (5 deaf thru hikers including me) for a thru hike. You live in Michigan right now? Lacie, one of deaf thru hikers is from Michigan and her parents are deaf too. I am not sure if your parents know her parents? She plan to host a bonfire party in July in Michigan at her backyard. We will be taking off the trail for three days to Michigan and back to Trail again. So, if you plan to hike on average pace, then it will be great to hike with you.

Let's say third week of March I'll be trying this thing again -- I must be crazy. I keep wondering how I'm going to react to having to hike the same long stretch again. Praying for an early spring. Haven't thought of a new trail name yet, though.
I'm so much looking forward to grinding out miles, to being tired all the time, to loudly cursing each steep mountain, to the hiker conversations, and to living life deliberately.

Hey hey...I am THERE! Just don't know yet if I'm going SOBO or NOBO. If NOBO, it will be a April 15th start. If SOBO, it will be a June 1st start. Depends on work. I am sooo excited!

Deal me in.

I hope to do the approach trail on 31 Mar and head north 1 April.

I'm retiring from the Air Force and getting divorced. I guess you could call it a transition phase.

In 2003 I knew a man who retired from the Air Force 6 weeks latter he was dead of a cerebral hemmorage.

Moral of the story tomorrow never comes.

I'm going in '05

Heading out in mid-March. Like many, many others, I'll be heading North. Four months and counting... So close, yet still so far away.

Is getting put off until 2006, sad to say. I'm making a ton of money at my job (lots of work available in my field these days), so I'm paying off all my debts, helping out my sister (aftermath of lousy divorce with small children), and working on getting top-notch gear to hike with. Oh, and I'll still be hiking on my times off. By early March at the latest, I'll do a section hike of all of the AT in Georgia, then in early May latest do about 100 miles of the AT in NC. Smokies and Fontana before summer...

You prayed for me to make a lot of money? I don't see the point, but I appreciate the sentiment. Thanks! ;)

P.S. I'm still getting to do at least week-long section hikes every 7 weeks or so, so I'm not exactly losing touch with the Trail in the meantime.

A few months ago you couldn't afford a pair of loppers for trail work. Wow! What a turn around!!!! :clap :clap

Thanks for cheering me on, Hikerhead. What made the difference was not restricting my job search to Atlanta. I went looking nationally, and boom, in no time flat I had offers for half a dozen professional-level jobs in one of my fields (environmental, biotech, or energy), ones that all paid comparably to or higher than I've ever made. GA is just a lousy place now for many types of scientists to try to find work, I'm afraid.

Anyway, I'll soon have GREAT gear, and will be on the Trail at least one week out of every eight. Thanks to everyone on this site that's provided advice on gear in its widest sense (even, "I bought a _____, and it S*CKED!). ;)

"No doubt you'll invest in the very best method for keeping your face from resembling.... well, you know what I mean."

Of course. It is called a razor, and I have almost thirty years of experience in its use. I fully intend to bring one on my through-hike; I doubt the disposable ones weigh half an ounce. Pretty ood line, though, saimyoji.

"Seriously though, congrats on the recent windfall!"

Again, thank you for the sincere good wishes. However, I don't consider it a windfall, having IMO earned my recent paychecks with some eighty-hour workweeks in somewhat demanding conditions.

BTW, on another topic, having lived in Japan myself, I agree completely with your assessment of Nippon as physically very safe crime-wise -- and very expensive.

In looking at everyone's posts in this thread, it seems that a lot of people are leaving at what I consider to be pretty early in the year (February and March). In the research that I have done, April was listed as the traditional start time so I'm planning on hiking NOBO starting my thru hike mid to late April. Is this too late???

I will be heading out tomorrow for Gainsville, GA., and then hope to start from Springer Sunday or Monday. Lots of anticipation AND anxiety. Hope these old legs can walk the walk. And I hope the weather gods are kind.
Damn this pack is heavy! (40+) Look forward to warmer weather so I can shed the extra clothing. Hope to see some of you on the trail. Skeeterfeeder....

I am planning a thru-hike starting April 10, 2005. My birthday is on May 12, right when trail days will be happening. I will hopefully make it to trail days for my birthday. I did that last year, followed by a section hike to kincora from Damascus. See you in the spring.

Looks like from the 19th throught the 24th will be action packed. Thos who think they will get in shelters Better bring a tarp, or tent.

I have decided agaisnt my two man Clip Flashlight which has been my constant companion for years...but its just heavier then I want to deal with this year. Of course I may change my mind after two frosty mornings...

It's official, I'll be starting Sunday March 6th! Got my pack right, only thing I am not skimping on is clothing. I'm going sure to make sure that I am warm. I know the temps can go down to close to zero and I'm ready for it. Pack right now is 27 pounds (not including food) and I'll be toasty and warm. My rain gear is going to be my laundromat clothes, I am not carrying any town clothes. Also going with a white gas stove instead of a alcohol one which I've heard has trouble in cold weather. When it warms up after the Smokies, I'll switch to more lightweight clothing and gear. I'm driving myself but I'll swing by the bus station in Gainesville to see if anyone needs a free ride to the Falls on Sunday.
