i sway back and forth on icebreaker and the like (smartwool/patagonia wool). i love how it feels and all the pros it has, but the price is unbelieveable. i feel i can get the same benefits by wearing a light wool sweater (goodwill $4) as my 2nd layer (or heavy baselayer) if you will, in a 4 layer cold weather system.

i'm currently leaning towards this system for cold:
-silk base
-light wool sweater/poly long john bottoms
-convertibles (i've been looking at my local army/navy for liner pants in small, but they only seem to have XL or XS :(
-field jacket liner or down sweater
-precip


thanks though for the heads up. i almost pulled the trigger on some of the 320 stuff. it is really nice stuff if you've got the extra dough. i own a 200 weight long sleeve and like it a lot...

I missed the sale, but I love Icebreaker gear. I can find the money for it. No more stinky synthetic shirts. Silk didn't work for me--dries too slowly and feels clamy.

I didn't feel this way when I was young, but now if I can find a supremely good product, I buy it, almost regardless of the price. No regrets so far.
Plenty of regrets from using cheap junk.
