i am thinking of purchasing an osprey aether 85 for super cheap. its 85 liters too big?
Too big for what? Weekends, yes. Week-long and you like to pack in extra stuff, no.

between 4 and 5 pounds. on the heavy side, but not bad for the load it can carry - rated for 55 pounds

For me, it's the opposite! I carry more stuff on weekend hikes because I don't have to carry it thousands of miles.
There's also a third option, frameless packs, for the really light weight packer.

I have an Osprey Aether 70. Weighs in at 4lbs, 12oz with 4400ci. I can pack all my equipment with plenty of room for food/water and have some room left over. I would imagine that if you are a winter hiker, you would want more room for heavier/warmer clothes so the 85 may not be too big.

where did you find an aether 85 for super cheap? I'd like one for a winter pack.
I was going to post this on the gear for sale forum, but since two people here have mentioned they R looking for an Osprey Aether I have a 75 L in very good condition that I would be willing to part with for cheap. I'm only selling it because I have been steadily transitioning to smaller volume lighter wt packs and I don't use the Aether anymore and would like to see someone else have it that has a greater need for it. It is indeed a bomber pack. PM me.
