As of Feb 2, 2009, a good sized cold snap is heading through Tennessee/North Carolina areas. Snow will be the main precipitation for the afternoon, with possible sleet and freezing rain.

County schools, and some city schools are already dismissing early.

So you thrus on trail right now, here is another snow system for you all.

Here is a pic from the Purchase Knob cam

There is some precipitation falling currently off of TN91 (I am about 12 miles from Watauga Dam and can see the ridgeline the AT follows on Iron Mountain.) It has been falling steadily for about an hour but no accumulation as of yet.

Isn't it fun to watch snow fall? Of course, if there was already a foot of snow on the ground, it might not be as fun to watch:rolleyes:...

See you on the trail,

Sure!!!

Its that good puffy snow, but with it being still just above freezing in the city. We will not have snow cover. But I am sure some the ridgelines will have a good dusting.

Just google mountain web cams. There are 3 near the Smokies. Look Rock, Cold Mountain, and Purchase Knob.

How is the early bird run doing? Heard a bunch jumped off trail for the severe stuff. And I only herd about Trek braving the elements so far.

actually, I think it might be more like 1/2 an inch...ok, maybe 3/4 of an inch...:D

:sunCurrently, the sun is shining. The Iron Mountain ridgeline has a nice dusting, but that is about it.

Tonight and tomorrow might produce more. Have to wait and see.

Stay warm and dry out there, kayak karl.

Good webcam site is www.highcountrywebcams.com (http://www.highcountrywebcams.com). Shows a lot of the mountains and ski resorts in Western North Carolina.

We've had more consecutive cold nights (below 32 deg -- many nights in the 20's) than I ever remember having. Usually we’ll get a cold-snap, then it goes away, and the days are usually nice, but this year it just doesn’t seem to go away.

It's ~1030 and it's still only 43 deg.

I know I’m sounding like a whinny punk, but that’s why I live in Florida. :sun

A light dusting and everyone is in a tizzy! I'm hitting the trail on Feb. 20 after leaving my home in Steamboat Springs, CO where I've received almost 300 inches of the white fluffy stuff this year. Winter camping is in snow caves and high temps often reach above zero. Everything is relative...

Had to go check out the trail. Went to the closest access point which is at Cross Mountain Rd. Hiked North through the Osborne Farm to where the trail re-enters the woods. It was about 15F with about 8 inches of snow. Took some photos and uploaded (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/browseimages.php?s=&do=member&catid=&imageuser=8692&searchid=&orderby=dateline&direction=DESC&cutoffdate=-1) them.

I just returned from a hike in the Smokies. There is over 18 inches of snow all along the ridge from Mollies Ridge Shelter to Spence Field. The temps were in single digits with 30-40 mph winds. Drifts were as much as 3 ft high. I wasnt able to get any higher, but can imagine that there is even more snow at Silers, Clingmans, Ice Water Springs, and Pecks Corner. There was one thru hiker that was about a day ahead of me. I hope the road and Newfound gap is open when he gets there. That is one NOBO that will be glad to get into Gatlinburg for a couple days. :)

just bailed on a section hike up by Erwin. found out my 0 degree bag isn't. Spent the night shivering at Curley Maple and then went north to the first road and got lucky. A pickup was there with some people out taking pictures of the snow. Hitched a ride back to my car at Uncle Johnnies and came home.
