View Full Version : a 'backpack hood' for raingear or does such a thing really exist?

I've been searching the web for hours trying everything to find a 'pack hood' that I came so close to buying at Bluff Mountain Outfitters in Hot Springs. I can't remember the brand or exact name. It's very similar to this one from Outdoor Research (http://www.outdoorresearch.com/site/pack_hoody.html), but without the pack cover. It's just the hoody part and a short section from it that somehow attaches to or flops over the pack cover you already have. It's kind of an alternative raingear that mainly just keeps rain from running down your back and soaking through the backpad of your backpack.

I know I saw one in Hot Springs and I'm pretty sure I'm not losing my mind. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
With all the gear junkies on here someone must know :D. Thanks

I have a Sea to Summit "tarp pancho"...is that what you were looking for?

Sorry, I did not read your post entirely....I think Dana Designs used to make what you are looking for...when they were around.

Thanks for the ideas
The Dana Designs UL Pack Fly (now relabeled as Marmot) is about the same as the Outdoor Research pack hoody minus 1.5oz. Maybe that's the closest there is to what I'm trying to find. Or I could breakdown my old rain jacket and make my own.
I know it was in Hot Springs though. I was practically drooling over it, but then decided to stick with my hot and disgusting rain jacket.

i've been contemplating making something similar to this by cutting off some fabric of the front of a poncho (maybe frog togg poncho would work)...

basically a hood for my head, a little fabric in front to hold it in place, and fabric over the shoulder straps and top of the pack. i talked to cedar tree (maker of the packa) about doing this, but him and i weren't on the same page.

hmm

Try calling Bluff Mountain Outfitters and see if they still have it or if they can tell you the brand name and where you might get one if they no longer have one or plan to restock.

Why don't you use a standard rain jacket...put hood on head and flop rest of jacket over pack and pack cover? Then just tie sleeves or tuck under pack's shoulder straps. Just an idea...good luck. :)

Great minds think alike? :sun
- It was a lot of excess material, held water like crazy, and the hood kept slipping. It just needs some modification, which is why I was trying to find this thing for an example. If I just trim it down and find a way to attach it, maybe glued velcro tabs on my packcover and strings to tie it to the sternum strap ...that would be pretty cheap too, which means I could dump up to $50 more into the sleeping bag fund :-?
