I hear the cicadas will start coming out soon. Please post if you spot them emerging near the southern trail.

In my neck of the woods, (SW WV), the cicadas were out in force last year. I did not hike nearby on the trail, but the cicadas in the woods behind my house were like the sound track of a SF movie. This constant drone in the woods. If I was outside on the telephone the caller on the other end of the phone could hear them. The two trees in my yard had a carpet of carcasses out to about 5-6 ft off the trunks at the end of season. Should be quite the squishy site in outbreak areas.

This is good info for some folks, particularly those in the north and some areas of central VA and West VA, wondering about this year's brood. There are a dozen or more broods that emerge in different years. This year's brood is the largest on the planet, which is why it's getting so much press, but it may not come to where you live.

Here's a map for TN. Scroll down to the 17-year map on page 3. Looks like all of the A.T. in Tennessee will be prime cicada territory.

However it doesn't say whether they will emerge primarily in the valleys, or also in the hilly areas at higher elevation.
This year will be my 4th "visit" with the little critters. 1956, 1970, 1984, now. Thanks for making me feel OLD! I don't actually remember the 56 visit as I wasn't 2 yet.
As to touching them, I have touched many, never got a headache from em.
Plan on eating one this year, just because.
I figure they will drive the cats nuts, all 5 of them :jump Especialy the oldest "Velcro" our cowerdly lion :D
I don't get to hike (more than an overnight) this year, so hiking with the bugs will not be a problem.
