Guys, the other night I came across a site that sold a little widget that would allow you to attach a camera to the end of your trekking pole to do self photo/video.

Now I can't find the link and I'm leaving for San Diego tomorrow. Anyone know the site or the product?

damn, cool thing,
after taking apart a broken tripod, i tried glueing the part for the camera to screw onto, onto my leki pole, but on the top of the handle, so one slick rock in pennsilvania later and i had a nice little gash in my hand and no more monopod

I use this http://joby.com/products/gorillapod/2 and can attach it to just about anything or it ca nbe used as a mini tripod. The Gorillapod has rubber rings on the segments so it will even hold on slick surfaces like a metal pole. Sorry to sound like a commercial, but I love mine!:) I was in Walmart a few months ago and I think I saw a knock-off there as well.

The weight is, somewhat, prohibitive for a hike. The two smallest, are 11.5 ounces.

That "stickpic" looks light and neat.

I just saw that- I think they need to re-asses the weights. I have the Go-Go and it can't weigh more than a couple of ounces. Unofficially- it weighs less than my Zippo lighter in a hand to hand comparison.

The weight refers to the max weight each item can hold. Doh!!!

I Didn't know about this thingy when I hiked in 06 and I took a pole and custom 'carved' a spot and embedded a screw that held mine for me - what a pain that was, the pole when not attached to the camera was not really very useful for difficult 'propping' - you could always feel the the thing!

Gotta love this attachment! ;)

What kind of camera are you going with?

It's a cool idea, but how would you stand it up to take a picture with you in it with a group? I thought it was going to be something that attached to the handle end of the pole for use when the pole was stuck in the ground.

I will stick with my gorillapod.

This is a great product. I used it on the JMP last summer. Make sure you put your camera strap around your hiking pole before you try to take any pictures.

It serves a different purpose. Sticpic is ideal for solo backpackers. I'm going to do some on trail video and it's perfect for that!

Are you starting the PCT? Kind of early. stickpic gave all the hikers free ones last year at the KO. I somehow missed getting one.

Sly,

I'm in San Diego for the next week or so for work. I just extended my trip and bought two days from the company so I'm doing a long weekend hike on the PCT. Mt. Laguna north. Should be fun.

Yeah, I too got one of those free stickpics at the PCT kickoff last yr. The thing is ridiculously simple, it's weighs almost a whisper, and it works! Those were some hard working friendly entrepreneurs getting their product out there. I camped next to them at the kick off. They were always offering me food, drinks, and another stickpic.

Mt Laguna area is nice. Check out the maps and see if you can start a little south of there, you go through some nice forest. Lake Moreno?

Ended up using my joby gorillapod on this trip. Worked out pretty well. Some rough, no slip tape on the end of the trekking pole would have made it 10x easier as the joby grips slipped slightly on the metal pole.

RIT where did you end up hiking? How was it?

Mt. Laguna north for two days. Definitely not prepared for the amount of snow on the trail. Despite that, it was beautiful, the sun was shining, and the trail (when not snowy) was easy walkin'.
