What type of journal/communication device is most used on the AT? What are costs involved? What are pros and cons of these devices? Examples: pocketmail or palm pilots. Any other methods or devices? I'd appreciate any helpful information. Thanks.

The most often used journal device is paper. As for communication, If you want to speak to someone behind you you leave a message in a shelter journal or tell a SOBO (NOBO if you are SOBO). If you want to speak to someone in front of you, you speed up or tell a faster hiker. Believe me I'm not against pocketmail or palmpilots, I might even get one someday.
