Taking a month long break halfway.....isn't that cheating?

Cheating whom or what? I hope you're joking.

I was under the impression that would be considered two long section hikes as opposed to one long one?

I would suspect that it would rob you of the experience somewhat as well?

Just thinking out loud.

What if you take a 1 day break every 3 days, for a total of 30 days while hiking the trail. Since that adds up to a month, it's the same thing. Obviously, the only way to thru-hike is to take NO breaks other than to walk to resupply points and return immediately to the woods.

I like this quote: “I'm expecting cold and wet,” he said. “Especially in the Smokies, I might have to get some snow shoes out there." All real hikers construct their own snow-shoes from downed wood and parachute chord...right? RIGHT? back me up on this guys....

By the time you finished making a pair of snowshoes that way, the snow would likely be gone..

As for taking a month off, I see no problem with that. Makes a lot of sense acutally, if you can afford the time off.

Hold on.....

This is the "Top Story"

Might be a small town ? small paper ?
I wish him all the best- I hope he enjoys his hike - I hope he learns a lot.
I'm in the same boat - I'm using the economic situation to my advantage as I see it. Great time to hike and hike some more.
I don't have a lot of interest in the CDT and don't want to predict the future or make bold statements - but plans are another matter and if that works out I'll be hiking a lot in the near future. :-? Do I get a "Top Story" in my local paper now ?

Ditto, yeah, I don't get it either, like...what makes this hiker any different than the other hundreds who will take to the trail this year and not just attempt but finish the trail? And not just the At either...
These news pieces just rubs me the wrong way sometimes...

It's a newspaper from a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. It was either a "top story" about him or one about a possum being run over by Aunt Mable. The possum story is being saved for the Sunday "feature of the week" page.

Maybe a small town paper with not much going on ?
I glanced at the article, didn't read all of it.
Maybe he is well known ? Graduated high school, college and a celeb. in town ? I don't know..but he's a hiker and that's all that matters.
:) I'm just jealous!

I'm from this area, and most people round here go to this University. It is a very small College Town (just started servin alcohol in some places too), and from my point of view, A college grad from this area doing something like this is pretty big news to most.
