My husband and I are looking for a great hike to celebrate our 1st anniversary. On our honeymoon we went backpacking in Yosemite and we'd like to have another memorable hiking experience. We'd like to stay on the east coast this time, preferably on or around the AT. We're planning a 5-7 day vacation for the last week in May. Any ideas for scenic week-long hikes?

When I saw your post, I was reminded of a fun and informative thread some time ago about snakes. Your window is too early to experience Roan Highlands in Bloom (http://www.tjhsst.edu/~dhyatt/azaleas/asa2001/roan3.html), but that's what I would wish upon you.

When does the catawba rhododendron at Rhododendron Gap bloom? I have some Kodachromes I exposed on the way home from one of the ATC meetings in the 1980s. I don't recall when I visited, but I hit it at the right time. I've also got an especially nice Kodachrome of a flame azalea on Whitetop.

May is a great time for blooming rhodo and mtn laurel along the Blue Ridge Parkway section.

This would be a great trip.
If you wanted to trim the mileage some, maybe SOBO from Partnership or Fox Creek.
Rhododendron Gap probably won't hit full bloom until mid June or Solstice.
My bride and I honeymooned up there in '79 and hit the Gap at full bloom without knowing what was up there.
We we're blown away -green and purple covered the whole side of the mountain.
Take time to have fun.
Caution, the ponies know how to un-zip a backpack.
