I was originally going to buy the MSR Hubba. After looking extensively for a used or cheap one the lowest price I could find was 230$ from Campmor. Weight isnt an issue so much for me, was just wondering if anyone new of a comparable one man tent for a little less dough.

check REI sales, I just bought a Hubba Hubba for $190 there. And if you go to REI.com they have a outlet, you could check

depends on what you are looking for....
tarps are the cheapest route...
also look for previous years models: http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/clearancelist.cfm?cat=tents (like these)

I'm not sure where Rockland is, but the LL Bean outlet in Freeport sometimes has the Hubba from returns that are pretty reasonable. It might be worth making a call and seeing if they have something that they would be willing to hold if the price is right.

Look into Kelty tents. I got two and after much use (without a drop cloth/footprint) they have much more use left -- virtually no apparent wear.

I just check the outlet and found The North Face Tadpole 23 Tent for $169, its a 2 man tent, but if weight isn't a option, the extra room would be nice.

REI Chrylasis for $125

I bought the cheapest brand new tent in the world at $15. I actually used it on the LT for a section. I put some seam sealer and water proofer on it. It didn't actually rain. It was more like a hard mist and the tent was fine. It came with stupid fat poles that I used my hiking sticks for instead.

Let me also throw out there that im arriving in Atlanta on April 1, I've never given much thought into tarps so if anyone has some pro's they would like to share and if April 1rst is to early for tarping, i'd love to hear some feedback

That's when the snipes are biting and tarps won't give you any protection.:)

At the risk of becoming a one-trick pony on the subject, let me once again express my love and admiration for the Alps Mountaineering Zephyr 1.0 . Better than a Hubba and less expensive.

Here's a pic of the tent in action:

+1. Best kept secret out there. I had it, loved it. I sold it and bought a zephyr 2.0 so I could take my son out with me.

I think it is very well built with good features.

It weighs a bit more than the hubba (a bit) simply because it is a bit bigger and includes a gear loft.

A cheap one with very good reviews: http://www.rei.com/product/731378

REI should be having a 20% off one ticket item for members offering soon. That would make this baby $80. I'm holding a $50 gift card from them for getting their Visa Card, and if I use my upcoming dividend, well . . . how does almost free sound? :D

Cheap, quality one man tent...Eureka Spitfire.

I went with the Eureka Backcountry One, on the theory that it was better ventilated and would suffer less from condensation issues. Paid $120 before Christmas ... I see it's a bit more now, but still much better price range than the Hubba.

3 pounds 14 ounces, which can be cut down by eliminating that third pole that you see crossing the top of the tent (I use tie-downs instead) and replacing out the 6 aluminum stakes with lighter titanium stakes. It has 24 square feet of floor space (8'x3') leaves plenty of room at one end for your pack/boots (I'm 6'1" if you're taller, might get a little cramped). It comes with a stuff sack, but I don't use it. I wrap the poles/stakes into my closed cell pad and stuff the tent and tarp into my pack folded but loose. Saves some weight there. Couple of inside mesh pockets for storing stuff and a mesh attic which I don't use. Easy as pie to set up and is freestanding.

No vestibule though, so if that's important to you, look elsewhere.

I would have to vote for the Eureka Spitfire. Great little tent for the money. Less than a hundred dollars. The standard model not the UL model. Not a whole lot of extra room once you are in it. Some room at the head and feet and small amounts on either side. Vestibules pretty small also.

When it's raining and you open the door, does the floor get wet?

I know you asked about Tents, but you might consider a Hammock system as well.

As far as tents, the Seedhouse series is very nice.

I really like my Coleman Kraz X1, 3lbs $99.99 (not free standing) packs very small. Really handles the wet weather nicely

Im really looking into the Alps Zypher 1.0 Looks like a pretty solid tent. A lot less money then the Hubba. The Coleman Kraz looks good as well, only downside for me is it stands at 3ft tall. No sit up room, im 6'1 this could be a problem. Im not looking for a mansion but the ability to sit up would be, over the span of 5 months, a luxery most appreciated.

What is wrong with the Eureka Spitfire UL model?

Jersey Joe...I have the "regular" Spitfire 1 man tent. I've never seen the "ul" in person but others have noted it's lack of interior room down by the feet since the "UL" model doesn't have the second set of poles down by the foot end.

also, the spitfire UL rear struts are reported to rub and wear through the fly. don't want no holes in your fly.

Thanks for the info...I guess they have to cut corners somewhere to make the tent lighter...
