where can i find decent instructions, and maybe a pattern or something for making my own quilt? and for those that have made their own quilts what is the recommended insulation to use and how much does one need to stay warm? thanks for the help.

This kit from Ray Way is about the easiest to make, either in the 40 degree version or the "Alpine" (28 degree). I have the latter, it is light but a bit bulky. You'll need to also make his bomber hat since a quilt doesn't have a hood like a mummy sleeping bag.
