A couple of trails that are currently on my short list are the 25-mile Fires Creek Rim Trail and the Chunky Gal Trail. The Chunky Gal connects to the AT, and will take you to the Fires Creek Rim Trail.

Here's a link to some info about the Fires Creek Rim Trail;

There is a guidebook available for the Chunky Gal & Fires Creek Rim Trails. It's available from John Ray. He's the same guy who did the guides to the Bartram Trail.

Here's another link about the area.

If you are interested in picking up a trail guide, or helping out with maintenance in this area, please drop me a note at [email protected]. For those of you going to Trail Days, I'll try and have my copy of the trail guide at the American Hiking Society booth. Drop by and say hello. You can take a peak at the guide if you like.

Howdy,

I hiked the the Chunky Gal Trail this summer. I started out off the AT at Deep Gap. I was there around the end of June through July 3. Seems like I picked the rainiest time of year ( pre Ivan and Frances) to go. I had intended to do Fires Creek and cut over to the Bartram, but decided to backtrack out when I reached the Shinbone Ridge trail in the middle of another extended downpour. It was a tough hike with a fair amount of overgrowth, and some serious elevation changes (especially for a Floridian) I didn't know what gaiters were but I do now and will have a pair for when I get back out there. I did have the guide by J. Ray. I am pretty sure I would have gotten lost without it. After all is said and done, I am anxious to get back up to this area when I get the chance. In 6 days I saw 0 people, 1 bear, 1 wolf.
Have you done these trails yet?
