With all this money that the government is going to be spending to stimulate the economy, what's in it for the AT?... Anything.

One suggestion:
Maybe now would be a good time to build that useless foot bridge across the Kennebec river that there never was any money for. Building it would at least create some jobs and be of use to hikers. It otherwise does not have to make financial sense, it only needs to create jobs.

I don't think the Kennebec will be a high priority on anyone's list. (except perhaps page views on whiteblaze)

Thankfully, not one red cent.

I talked to an employee at the GSMNP and he said that the moneys would effectively double their budget for the year. Thats a good thing seeing how they have been cut to the bone over the last 8 years.

The National Endowment for the Arts gets $50 million, scheese. The trail should get at least that much.

When you print that much money it gonna take lots of ink and paper. Maybe they could get some of the wood from blowdowns on the trail.

$146 million for “operation of the National Park System, for deferred maintenance of facilities and trails and for other critical repair and rehabilitation projects.”

If folks would like to talk about aspects of the stimulus bill that relate to trails, go ahead. Posts not related to trails won't stay up.

How much money does the AT need and for what? If anyone says "new shelters", I ask does a trail that's designed to provide a retreat from civilization and a reconnection to nature really NEED shelters.

There's a big difference between NEED and WANT, but that line is very blurry here in our country.

Nobody on the Appalachian Trail is peeing on anything important. The National Endowment For the Arts, on the other hand, paid Robert Maplethorpe for a glass of his piss with a crucifix in it.

So, you can see why the AT won't get anything, but the NEA will get $50 million. It's about priorities, folks.

My suggestion would be for hikers to quit peeing behind trees and start peeing on churches and other things people find holy and pure.

Then you'll get some stimulus money from the new Democrat Congress!

If that's the case, no thanks.

Another good example of why we no longer have a politics forum.
