Goals for 2009: Re-break unassisted speed record on the Pacific crest trail with the additional goal of breaking David Horton’s 66 day assisted record at the same time, but in an unassisted fashion.

I thought the PCT record he posted last yr he avg more than 41 m/day? Barring injury or extremly nasty weather, I think he can and will do it! Nice guy!

At 41 miles a day, it would take 65 days to do the trail. Last year he averaged around 37.5 mpd

See, and U said that obtaining the Phd. in Mathematics and the 14 yrs U spent at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory was a waste of your time?

Yeah!

Scott's big advantage (over Horton) is knowing the trail. Like you said barring injury or bad weather, he has a good chance of setting the record.

That's a tough record. "Wall" held the record for a while. He is an incredible marathon runner and hiker who taught me a lot.
Still comes over here for the Phuket marathon every year.

Good luck Scott.
What's the start date?
If i hit Tahoe in July, i would think i could see him.

David had the bad luck of doing his run during a very high snow year. It makes a difference. Scott should have better conditions this year.

Not necessarily. The rainy season is far from over and the last 2 weeks have been making up for some lost time. When April 1st rolls around, we'll see how it looks. We've had years with low rain fall that more then made up for it in March.

The perfect year to have done a record attempt was 2007 which had lower snow levels in the Sierra and SoCal then I can remember. If I remember right, the May 15th snow level was better then the average June15th. I couldn't believe how far north the herd was by early July since the Sierras didn't slow them down.

Am I remembering correctly that Backpacker did an article about Scott yo-yoing the PCT a few years ago?

I saw Scott and Joe the day before they finished their hike last year. Scott looked as if he could have turned right around and headed back south. He did not look worn down at all...amazing. If he starts mid-June again, I'm guessing he might not have snow issues. He is a super nice fella, and I wish him all the best.

You should offer to sell him your trail name:banana

Do you know if he posts a gear list? That should be interesting too.

Here's the gear list he had on his old website from his 2006 PCT yo-yo:

I believe it does, but technically Scott doesn't run, he floats and glides!

I believe Scott knows what I could tell from last yr's 08 record setting performance - he can make even more efficient use of his time on the trail! Hopefully, he will continue to enjoy what he is doing. All the Best Scott!

GO SCOTT GO!

I met Scott and Joe at Old Station last year and really enjoyed their account of the previous day's hike through a fire area. Given that experience, "Melted Insoles" could be Scott's trail name.

It's good to have goals and if anyone can make this, he can.

41MPD sustained average is crazy! I hope Scott really goes for it this year and if so I'm looking forward to hopefully being passed by him somewhere along the way.
