It looks like the drought is finally starting to let up..

According to the ATC it looks like less than 400 have reported finishing a thru hike... that would be less than 500 last year.

Anyway I hope the completion rate for 2009 is better this year. Good luck to everyone planning a thru this year!

Actually, if the numbers were down last year, it probably had more to do with TOO MUCH water. There were torrential downpours and overflowing streams up north last summer. A lot of folks reported having a miserable time through New England; several had to get rides around what are normally doable fords. Wouldn't be surprised if more quit in New England than usual.

Though, that is great and all that the drought is letting up.

Learned the following quote from my son in kindergarden today. Thought this might be an appropriate thread to put it in. Good luck Thru-hikers 2009

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself any direction you choose.

You’re on your own. And you know what you know.

And you are the one who’ll decide where to go…"

- Dr. Suess, from Oh! The Places You’ll Go!

If you paid the small dues you'd get them all.

American Weather Service says this year will have slightly below average rainfalls in the south during the spring and slight to moderately higher temps in New England during the fall. The rest of the year should be relatively average... That's what they say!!!

not much can compare to fall of 07'
When I and other flip flopers & sobo's
Hit Virginia and couldn't find water for 30 miles sometimes
I remember digging into sandy stream beds if they were romotely damp
Or stopping on rocky stretches near the punch bowl trying to listen for water
What year that was in contrast to 08
When it never seemed to stop raining between harpers & rangeley

Each year, the list of A.T. 2,000-milers who have reported hike completions in the preceding 12 months is printed in the May/June issue of ATC's member magazine, A.T. Journeys.
