It seems to me that people tend to pick their trail names before they might be labeled with one they are not too keen on.

If this is so, do you introduce yourself as the trail name, or say, "Hi, I'm Johnson but my trail name is _____"?

I guess it doesn't matter that much and am just curious.

It may take some folks awhile to be fully comfortable with doing it, but just about everyone says "Hi, I'm (fill in Trail name)".

While there are always a few folks who neither adopt nor use Trail names during their hikes, they're the small minority.

It is however you want to do it. No rules.

eh. Name isn't Murphy. I'm going to go with "Blue" b/c I just got back from Australia and being a red head I was called "Bluey" or "Blue".

That makes sense.

A trail name is a Zen thing. However it comes to you is the right way. For some, that's by finding it in the air from others' voices; for others, it's found in their mind. It becomes part of who you are.
