What's the longest lasting breakfast, energy wise, that you guys eat before stopping later in the morning for a recharge like a power bar or chocolate? I usually have a few instant oatmeal packets with some dried fruit but in a few hours I start to run out of steam. Although that's probably normal when hiking. thanks, Mark S.

I got to where I ate two packets of oatmeal with dried fruit and nuts added or a hearty cereal with dried whole milk (hard to find) & then I would suppliment with two Poptarts. And 1 or 2 mugs of instant coffee of course! I was usually hungry a couple of hours later.....

My longest and only real meal on the trail is dinner, everything else is just piecemeal. I also eat oatmeal dry, but I don't consider it breakfast, it's just something for my stomach something to munch on, most of the time I eat it while walking. Breakfast is for towns.

Best I've found is to start with a handful of fig newtons or pop tarts, hike for an hour or two, then stop for a cup of muesli (raw oats, nuts, and raisins and powdered milk). That's good for a couple more hours.

I would have Carnation instant breakfast mixed with coffee. plus a homemade version of oatmeal with home fresh fruit, nuts, flax seed, and NIDO.. I would eat this around 7:00 and it would normally last until about 10-10:30 when it was time for a snickers bar or a handful of gorp..

I've never tried that! Intriguing idea... Is it good? What flavor instant breakfast? I'm so trying this!

Oatmeal with lots of dried fruit, powdered milk, and protein powder works okay, but on a longer hike I'm hungry again as soon as I hit the trail.

I often eat a smaller dinner for breakfast - sticks with me longer.

I'll go with the bacon and eggs, or just eggs and homefries - they keep coming up for air until lunch :D.

honestly, i don't think i've ever had a breakfast stick for long on the trail. i usually eat about 4 packs of instant oatmeal or grits and a couple of granola or nutragrain bar and then munch consistently on gorp until lunch. but then again, i'm hungry all the time anyway. i think i have a tapeworm.

I buy the Backpacker's Pantry granola and milk for two and eat the whole thing. If you do it with cold water, it's like cold cereal and warm water is more like oatmeal or grits. It lasts me to lunch most of the time.

I like to do: 3 - 4 packs of instant grits (300 - 400 cal) with about 1 tablespoon olive oil in (260 cal) & wash it all down with some hot chocolate in the form of 1 - 2 packs of chocolate Carnation instant breakfast (??? cal). My Jet Boil pot holds / heats just enough water for heating the grits & chocolate. This gives me around 600 cal to start the day with.

As I pack I put 3 - 4 granola / candy bars &/or jerky in a easy to reach place & eat about 1 an hr as I walk.

So I guess in reality "breakfast" for me lasts 2 - 4 hours.

Anything with lots of protein and carbs. Easiest is two Snickers and two Peanut Bars. IIRC, 1240 kcals and 23 grams of protein. Burp.

You can eat that while you're packing up, and all that's needed when through packing is to make coffee/hot tea.

Life ain't bad on the outside. It's messy, warm and stinky on my insides.

Beans. Hands down the most nutritious and longest lasting fuel in your body you can get. Also easy to carry dried and light weight. I like black beans myself.

I forgot to add the fact that we added protein powder to our oatmeal &/or cereal....that helps tremendously

2 servings of PB in a dry cup of of "real" oatmeal will really kick you down the trail as well. I put brown sugar and butter salt in 1 cup of oatmeal in a sandwich bag at the house, and have my wife mail them to me when I'm going that route.

However, I've recently started enjoying getting out of camp faster in the AM, and making old-fashioned oatmeal slows me down much more than the 5 minutes "steep" time that it gets in the Sarbar bag. :)

Oatmeal stuck with me a long time. However all time best was buckwheat pancakes in those places along skyline drive.

Some protein, I think will slow and even out the carb-burn rate.
