I'm not vegan, but would like to know if there is a good substitute for jerky that is considered vegan. Commercial and homemade versions greatly appreciated. thanks hooty

Two vegan products that I know of, carry on the trail, and enjoy:

Primal Strips

Tofurky Jurky

Did not see any purchase info for primal strips. Apparently Ingles Grocery carries the Tofurky.

You can make homemade fruit roll ups or strips,, no protein but still chewy..

I thought vegan jerky was called "pretzels".

I have ordered both Tofurky Jurky and Primal Strips online from:

http://www.healthy-eating.com/

Also have purchased these products in Whole Foods and other health food stores.

Here's my recipe. Everyone I shared this with on the AT said it was delicious. I liked the flavor, too, but I got tired of having to gnaw at each bite for 5 minutes before I could swallow, so I stopped including it in my maildrops.

Tofu Jerky[/*]
In small bowl combine:
6 Tbsp Yoshida marinade sauce (any kind of flavored marinade

will do)
4 tsp maple syrup
2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp black pepper
4 tsp brown sugar
Drain tofu and cut into ¼” slices
Dip slices into sauce to coat.
Place slices in a tightly sealed container for 2 hours to marinate
Place slices on dehydrator tray (no parchment paper needed) and

dehydrate at 155° for 6+ hours until hard and uniformly dark (oven

should work also).

There are a couple other brands out there, though of all of them I have found the Tofu Jerky the best tasting.

Another soy jerky is called Stonewall's Jerquee. I've eaten Primal Strips made by Primalspiritfoods, Tofurky, and Stonewalls. As with most jerkies, whether they be meat or vegeterian based, have water on hand when consuming them. Many are spicy, salty, or hot. Although, these three meatless jerkies are vegeterian I'm not sure if they are vegan.

I am going for the chairthrower recipe, also. And then the other recipe that was posted. I was surprised to see that tofu jerky costs as much as beef jerky. It just seems like it would take more to produce cows than tofus.

If you make your own, the softer tofu works better. Freezing the tofu before marinading it makes it a bit spongier and less chewy, but it then tends to be more brittle. I've tried a couple commerical brands (don't remember the names) but they do end up just as expensive as real jerky.

I agree. Soy Jerky (I think that's the brand name) is pretty good too.

Primal strips are NASTY. Stonewalls tastes like dogfood.

I've also made tofu jerky in the dehydrator, using baked (store bought) tofu.

BTW. I did a price comparison with the Vegan Store's Tasty Bites meals and going to the Tasty Bites website: Vegan Store charged $3.69 for a meal, Tasty Bites charges $2.59. The Primal Strip website might be cheaper than the Vegan Store also.

I never really compared prices because they carry all the goodies that I want and I could just get everything in one box but that might be something worth checking out to see if their products are marked up a bit. Thanks!

The reason I even brought it up is because I usually get the Tasty Bites meals by the case, 12 in a case, $28. A little cheaper in bulk. I made a large order to Primal Strips recently and can't remember if I got stuff in bulk, but I ordered several cases from them. But hey, I like your Vegan Store link and found some off the wall cashew cheese which might prove interesting . . Mr. Cow??
