One Pot Pasta and Vegetables

In a sandwich bag:

4-ounces small pasta (http://www.barillaus.com/home/Pages/Barilla_Piccolini.aspx) (7 minute cook time)

1/4 cup freeze-dried or dehydrated crumbled mushrooms (http://www.packitgourmet.com/Mushroom-Slices-p308.html)

1/4 cup freeze-dried green beans

1/4 cup freeze-dried sliced zucchini (http://www.packitgourmet.com/Zucchini-Slices-p189.html)

2 Tbsp diced sun-dried tomatoes (http://www.harmonyhousefoods.com/Tomatoes_c_25.html)

2 tsp Mushroom Truffle Hunt seasoning mix (http://www.urbanaccents.com/products/product_detail.asp?c=2&p=202)

1/4 tsp diced dried garlic

1/4 tsp fresh ground black pepper

Also take:

1 Tbsp Italian style dry bread crumbs (http://www.progressofoods.com/?View=OurProducts/Foods)

1 Tbsp or packet extra virgin olive oil (http://www.packitgourmet.com/Atlantic-Organic-Organic-Extra-Virgin-Olive-Oil-p11.html)

Shelf stable Parmesan cheese

One pot method:

Bring 2 cups water and the oil to a boil. Add in the bag of dry ingredients and return to a boil. Lower the heat and gently boil for 7 minutes, stirring often. You will want to keep the pot’s lid at an angle to prevent splattering.

Turn off the stove and let sit covered for a couple minutes. Add in the bread crumbs and toss, then add in as much cheese as you like and toss again.

Serves 1 normal appetite or two small ones for lunch. To serve two, consider adding in a 7-ounce pouch of chicken breast with the water/oil at the start.

bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add 1 package of ramen noodles and contents of MSG packet of your choice. cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat source then add 1 can of vienna sausages sliced into bite size pieces and enjoy. never mind. Your idea looks a lot more appetizing

I can get it at Cost Plus World Market (and it is cheaper as well). Any seasoning will work though :)

Lets see.....the pasta is from the store. Parmesan cheese? From the store. The oil? From the store.

Methinks you protest a weeee too much.

I could understand your sheer hatred if it was Mountain House being made. But uh, yeah....you do realize that you could do this same meal with fresh veggies if you chose?

Then again, where I choose to hike there isn't neither trail towns nor grocery stores to walk to  Nope, we have this thing called "wilderness" out West.

Lol...I had to laugh a bit though - near where I live is an area called the Issaquah Alps - they are the foothills of the Cascades outside of Seattle. Now you could hike from the local Trader Joe's in Issaquah, to the Alps - go up and over a few, then onto the rail to trail to the next town, North Bend (where Twin Peaks was filmed) then hike all day on yet another rail to trail and be to the PCT in say.....35 miles. :D

So in theory you could walk from the grocery store to the trail :D It would be a long day though. (On the PCT in Washington to get to an actual grocery store you have to get a ride and head downhill going West, as the main road crossings are the highway passes over the Cascades - and all you have to choose from is a few of very tiny C-stores at a couple of the passes. In most cases, the towns are a good 30 or more miles downhill where you can get good food as well.)

While this is another way to go in regard to resupply and what one eats on the trail it's not always right for all hikers under all ocassions. I also try to carry fresh foods, especially veggies and fruit, out to the trail. I would always rather have something fresh rather than freeze dried or dehydrated but for longer stretches between resupply where I'm already carrying a lot of trail food wt. I avoid or limit the extra water wt of fresh foods.

I don't think Sarbar is being elitest LW. She has a valid pt. Maybe, she could have said it in a less confrontational way, but many of the trails out west don't have the sheer number of resupply options as on the AT. And, many of the resupply options, like on the PCT and CDT, require a longer distance to get to them.

The fresh meat was a weird one - since the recipe didn't call for any :D (This recipe is vegetarian if one eats cheese)

I will also say that I don't carry fresh meat as I simply don't like cooking raw meat in the outdoors ;)

The '09 version now has a non-stick lining inside, the lid is a new plastic, comes with a folding Foon and now the mug is a semi see through plastic.

I think both versions are fine though! I never had any issue cleaning up the HAA interior versus the new non stick :)
