View Full Version : Mileage question and Sarvers Cabin
I am sitting at work right now, so I don't have my maps with me. Thinking about doing a day hike from route 42 in Newport Va. to 621 (Craigs Creek RD.). This goes over Sinking Creek mtn I believe and past Sarvers Cabin. I have not done this hike in about 15 years. When I last hiked it Sarvers Cabin was just that. An old cabin. I have heard that they now have a new structure or shelter there. I was also wandering what the mileage on this hike is. This area is just south of Pearisburg Va. Also is there a good free website to get mileages and elevation profiles on the AT

it's 11.3 miles
Sarver Hallow Shelter is north of Pearisburg
You're correct Sarvers hollow is north. Sometimes I'm direction deficit. Thanks for the mileage from 621. Good lunch spot. Sounds like their is a shelter there now. It was a beautiful spot back in the day. Old cabin with a creek running through, too bad they put a shelter there.

The new Sarver shelter is nice. It's off on a side trail a quarter mile and 400' below the AT, which runs along the ridgetop. From 42 to the shelter trail is 4 miles.
There's no good place to park along 42 right there, because it's narrow and on a curve surrounded by private property. I've had good luck in writing to the church around the corner and asking permission to leave a car in their lot. Even though they didn't ask, I did include $5 for the collection plate with one of my requests.

There's a small parking lot a mile or two closer to Sinking Creek mtn. Turn Right off of 42 and turn right again on the next rd. Parking lot is on the left after crossing a small bridge.
I edited out the mileage after seeing LW's post but the shelter is 4 mi n of VA 42 and 7.3 south of VA 621. .3-4 off trail.
Sly or LW easier north to south, or south to north, as far as elevation profile.
Looks a little bit easier northbound. The closer road mentioned earlier is VA 430 Sinking Creek has water, saves about a mile.

If you are not too hung-up on doing sarver via the AT....i have a suggestion from blacksburg take us 460 to craigs creek road (621) turn right on 621 proceed to caldwell fields turn left on a forest service road go up the mountain until you reach a power line park there go left from the road under the powerline until * see blazes about 150 yards...this trail will take * straight up the mountain to the old sarver place them folllow the blue blazes to the AT....now go right (North) on the AT the AT crosses rt 621 again.....this make a shorter two car drop...both cars parked on craigs creek road

Emphasis on "straight up the mountain!" I did this hike Saturday. 1500' up in the first 1.25 miles. Whoof.
The total hike he describes is about 8.3 miles. That assumes you have two cars or get a shuttle. If not, you'll have a few miles (3?) to walk along 621 as well.

Thanks for the offer, where are you headed. I posted a new thread about a hike from Carvers gap to Hot Springs earlier today, check it out, so what you do think. I did a 160 in July last year, had a blast. Waynesboro to Harpers Ferry. Whats your time frame for your hike. Might consider alternate plan
