I bought this jacket and shirt and was wondering if it would be a warm combo for the AT in late April. If not, i can just return it.

Yes. For the Southern Appalachians it will work fine.

No, you'll freeze your a$$ off most likely when a front comes through. You need something THICK with LOFT, like a puffball vest (my pick) and hoods are always good, like a Patagonia R1 Hoody.

when you are walking add raincoat and warm hat you should be fine at 20F or 35 with rain, to stay warm on long breaks at the lower end of temp I get into sleeping bag right away not after getting chilled with this set of clothing do not skimp on the sleeping bag as the clothing adds no loft

Consider a very light merino sweater, like $20 at a discount store. For summer, all you really need from there is a light rain shell. If I was to add a 3rd item, maybe 100wt fleece 1/4 zip, or maybe a 2nd merino sweater with the sleeves cut off. Just make sure one of the layers is looser than the other. When wearing fleece and wool together, its generally best to wear the fleece over the wool.

skin layer = Merino Wool Sweater - maybe with shortened sleeves = 8 oz
mid layer = 100wt fleece or 2nd merino sweater with 1/2 zip = 10 oz
rain shell = 8-10 oz

you shouldn't require a wind shell with this
