I am leaving from Springer Mountain on March 1st, beginning my trek of the Appalachian Trail. There is now a possibility of snow, which would be an awesome way to leave springer.
any other thru's starting on the 1st?

I'm not, but am going up to the Carter notch Hut on the 1st, where there is 6-7 feet of snow! (and maybe snowing on the way up).
Good luck to all you starting next week, hope you make it past Neels gap and well beyond.
Big difference from my March 1st start last year, where it was 65 degrees and clear skies.
Tons of people are starting on the 1st. I'd wager that it's the most popular day to start. You'll have lots of company.
Not going to be any snow accumulation at Springer. Have a great hike.

You may or may not see snow on March 1st, but you will see snow. You can see snow in Georgia from 3 different years (2006-2008) in my gallery. In 2007 I departed in April and still got snow.

Yep we were out in that too. At Erwin and over Roan Mtn, yeah.
It's the AT in springtime!
This has been an odd winter on the coast of Maine. It gets cold enough to get an 8 inch snow storm, that it goes above 35 degrees for a few days, then gets colder just in time for another snow storm.
Currently, it's 46 degrees in downtown Portland. We are due to get Sunday. Go figure.
Starting on Monday the 2nd, see you!!

March 3rd for me! See you guys out there!
The favorite starting date used to be April 1st (April Fool's Day). If you dropped off the trail you could say "April fool, I was just kidding about the thruhike". :D
March 4th seems to be gaining in popularity lately as people like to "March forth" on March 4th. Because of scheduling problems, I started at Springer on March 7th. it just happened to be my late father's birthday, so I dedicated it to him. I was only doing the Ga. section, however.
