Again I am new, plan on thruin it in a couple years. I have made my initial my initial investment. I will be doin a section at the beginning of april. I am buying my pack on sunday. I am kinda worried bout pack size cc n weight (total)...not cause of my gear! because of food and misc stuff.
(was hoping to have my gear and take it to the store some is still on its way)

Two choices are GG VT or Osprey Atmos 65

Gear list (rough estimated weight) Packed only

Pack (3.5)...wt of osprey
WM ultralite (1 13oz)
Ti goat bivy(6oz) (xtreme weather snap early april)
Tarptent cloudburst (2 12oz)
prolite 3 (1.2lbs)
Total=10lbs
Packed clothing (5lbs)
base layer
insulating top
rain gear
gloves(liners n shells)
wind shirt
extra socks n undies
stocking cap
Cook system (2lbs) (complete with stove h20 filter)
Misc (3.5 lbs)
includes hygiene, maps compass, rope, headlamp, stuff sacks, first aid, pencil n pad, knife, reading book , ect.

Total +/- 20lbs- minus food n carried H20

In your opinions!!! Keeping in mind this is an estimated wt list, and there is some comfort/ Learning wt involved. What pack should I go with, and am I gonna hit my +/- 30lb mark.

Why the Atmos 65 over the Exos 58?

ULA Catalyst at 46oz.

Why not a lighter tarptent? The Shires spinntex tarptent at Gossamer Gear would be my pick.

No need for the bivy for a cold snap. I find I am better off using extra clothing -- a down jacket, fleece pants -- that I am carrying anyway. Assuming you are small enough to fit inside the Ultralite with the extra clothing (I'm way too big for that.)

Having my gear in line first and buying the pack the very last thing worked well for me and reduced the anxiety level at the outfitters. :)

in my humble opinion pack weight isn't something i concern myself with. the weight of the pack itself, i mean. i'm looking for comfort and can it hold all my ****

Everyone needs to carry the 10 essentials, some are just lighter than others! If your gear is less than 10lbs, then you can use a lighter pack! The pack you listed is 3.5lbs whereas the ultralight packs were as little as 16oz so there's how you can save 2lbs and save money with a less expensive pack.

I just loaded my new Exos 58 with gear, food for 6 days and a liter of water and came in at about 31 pounds.

The pack weighs 40 ounces.

I plan on hiking the Skyline Drive portion of the AT in April.

It really feels comfortable and stable, but I wont know for sure until I hike with it.

With your gear list and the 58, you will easily come under 30 pounds, I would think.

Does your gear list look similar to mine!!!! I am headed to the outfitters in a couple hours to make my purchase. I am taking my sleeping bag, cook set and tent to get a rough estimate of how much room I will have left over for misc n food items. I am getting a sleep pad also while I am there so that will be in there also.

Actually, my gear is quite a bit heavier. Here goes:

Tent: Marmot Eos1 (51 Ounces)
Bag: Marmot Pounder Plus 25 (32 Ounces)
Pad: Thermarest 4 season (24 ounces)

Other similiar items. I have plenty of extra room. I do plan on strapping the tent the to the outside.

I grew up about 20 minutes from there (Culpeper, VA) and hiked it regularly when I was younger.

I have recently gotten back into more serious hiking and for the first trip out of more than 3 days, I wanted to be in familiar territory.
