How do you think the hiker box gets refilled?

Any drop that is open 7 days / week is good.

Many hikers find a mail drop unnecessary at Neels Gap. They have more than enough food to get you up the trail several days.

It is true that in all likelihood, you won't need a maildrop at Neel Gap, as they have plenty of stuff to get you to your next stop, Hiawassee. The food selection here is excellent and is fairly priced, too.

The "fee" of $1.00 gets immediately turned around for other hikers, i.e., Winton and his staff are constantly having cookouts, hiker dinners, etc. So nobody's getting rich off the "fee" for mail here; it all goes back to other hikers.

1 dollar is just fine, and he does do a lot for the hikers.

Dont need a mail drop there, as there is a good selection.

I have only been there once when I thru hiked in 07, I found the food selection to be lacking, especially for a place that is right on the trail that is passed by 1000+ thru hikers every year. Remember if you get a pack shakedown that they are in the business of selling hiking gear.

It is very convenient for those that hit the trail unprepared to have an outfitter at the beginning of the trail. I am just not in love with the place like so many others.

I used one effectively. Carrying 3-4 lbs less for the first three days seemed like a good idea to me. I also included a small amount of laundry detergent, sample size soap and shampoo for the shower and a small bottle of Crown Royal. It all made sitting on the terrace enjoying the setting sun that much better.

Gotta disagree with the comment about the food selection there being "lacking."

I just spent a few days there, and I thought the food selection there was just fine, and so did scores of other folks.

In what way, I wonder, was this place "lacking"?
