So i was looking at this useless set of hiking poles in my closet (useless because those particular poles get no use from me) and had an idea. How about installing a cattle-prod like device into the poles that could then be used on trail pests like squirrels, mice, hikers from minnesota, or rabid bears. They could be connected to a device that would generate and store charge as you hike.

So, if anyone would like to sign-up for beta testing, please PM warrgy.

Seems the best way to test this device would be on the simple, unsuspecting house cat. . .

i don't have any pets, and the last time i said "hey, come here a minute and let me poke you with this" to someone i had a lot of explaining to do.

I've often thought of that idea for dealing with out of control day hiker dogs, but I'm afraid I'd accidently push the button when both the pole and my feet were in a puddle of water

Hmmm. . . gonna need some type of laser technology for this one. . .

A friend of mine in High School made an electrical "shock box" from a Popular Electronics artical. He put it in a cardboard box with rabbit ear like wires sticking out of the top. Then he put it on top of the TV with a note which read "adjust for best picture". Which his mother did and was not amused.

You left the bar too early.

Brilliant, you would need a power source and thus add weight, making poles even more useless than they already are. I like it.

Actually you could use the capacitor, battery and trigger from the flash out of a couple of disposable cameras. Mount them in the tube and run a wire to the graphite tip. I can attest first hand that it packs quite a punch!

When I did my hike in 2007, I was so slow that Klipspringer -- one of the guys that I hiked with --made me hike in front of him. He kept jabbing me in the butt with his
hiking poles and hollaring "Mush". I sure am glad those poles weren't electrified. I really would have needed to change my shorts.

After Saimyogi tested his Leki cattle prod poles on the unsuspecting Bill the cat - Warg couldn't get him to explain what happened.... something about a hair ball.

I tried to find a way to quickly attach an arrow head to the tip of my hiking pole in an emergency. but could not find a way to safely arrow the arrow head when not needed.

Those capacitors in disposable flash cameras are of good value.

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-A-Hidden-Kodak-Shocker/

I've made this (not inside the camera, i've removed the parts and applied this to my refridgerator for a wandering roommate)

A tazer built into hiking poles?!?!?!

That is just sick & twisted!!! :(

I WANT TWO!!!!! :D

By the way, my cats would wait a few months, then revenge the h**l out of you! Being tazed will seem a nice thing in comparison.

I found out by accident. Bored one day I decided to see what was inside one of those disposable cameras and ended up closing the circuit between the capacitor and the flash:eek::eek::eek:! After recovering from the "shock", I then began thinking of all the ways this could be put to use. But I never considered making a hiking pole/ cattle prod. Since this would be a dual use item, would it be considered UL?:-?

Hey, I'M from Minnesota.

I think it's an awful idea, I'd rather have a sword in mine. Although on THREE occasions now I've used my poles to fend of mother grouse protecting their nests. I really don't try to hurt them, but when they blow up in your face like bombs, instinct kicks in... feathers everywhere.

Shock the crap out of them - cheesehead wanna-be's. But leave the squirrels out of this - they can't help it - just high energy.

Would it charge as you hiked from the spring motion inside?

On an other note. I have also been shocked by a disposable camera on accident. It was not fun.:(

Some company sells a combo unit flashlight and stungun that
packs about a million volts.
That should just about do it!

In the good old days we used to have great fun getting people to hold things hooked up to a model T Ford coil. The coils, however, would be a bit heavy to fashion to a hiking stick.
