I was just wondering some fun things or games people do on the trail to entertain themselves. Or games you have played with other hikers, Or fun things that you do with yourself or others when you get those boots off and food into your tummy.

spring is definatly showing signs of coming up here in Maine NOBO geese and lots of sun. have fun during the summer months everyone!

Make fun of clueless weekenders, then trick them out of their food.

Fart baseball? I'm camping with the wrong people. I bring along crossword puzzles, Sudoku, word games. They're light, you can rip them out of local papers as you go, and they help keep the mind a little more active.

On our 100 mile trek in PA, my brother and I just played the listing game while hiking. Examples: List Taco Bell Menu items, or shops at our local mall. Last one to answer wins.

There's a game called "Alyson Hannigan." It's named after the actress who played Willow on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the band dork in American Pie.

You need 6+ people for it to be fun. Each person writes the name of 5 people that everybody would likely know (can be historical, athlete, actor, politician, fictional character...just don't go too obscure because then it's no fun). You team up in pairs and draw the names out of a hat and try to figure out as many as possible, and when your minute is up, you pass the hat to the next team. Each round continues until all the names have been used. The game proceeds in three rounds:

Round 1: You can say anything you want to your partner to get them to guess the name, except the name itself, rhymes with "---", spelling it, or any other obviously lame ways to cheat. By the way, for each team's turn there is one clue giver and one name guesser. Reverse roles next turn.

Round 2: You can say two words per name. That's it.

Round 3: No words but can act it out.

The beauty of the game is that as the difficulty in communicating increases, you're hearing the same set of names for a second and third time. This makes everyone pay attention even when it's not there turn...so they can get it next round. Way better than charades or similar games, and if you use that day's map to write the names down, it's UL. Sounds stupid, I know, but mix in a little alcohol and hilarity will ensue.

Final recommendation: this is really inappropriate, but "Helen Keller" should be one of the names every time this game is played. It get's funnier and more offensive each round.

On other hikes (non-AT):

I once hiked with someone who carried a small (magnetic) chess set.

I have played cribbage--either with a small cribbage board or by keeping track of the "points" on paper.

Lots of poker and blackjack.

What about musical instruments? small ones of course like a harmonica, jaw harp, etc. might be kinda fun to get a few people some nights with various instruments and "jam out". Im taking my jaw harp to play on when camped out alone or near others with a musical taste.

Craps has replaced backgammon for me and my hiking friends.

We sometimes meet in Vegas, flying in from different locations so we get to actually lose some money before and after our hike too. (but it's fun)

Chutes & ladders, Cards, Chess. I stoled my friends kids car game (with my friends ok) and made a game kit that weighs 1.75 oz. It is a small 2 1/2" square tin box about 1/2" deep. On the inside bottom is a Chutes & ladders board, it came with small magnetic pieces and a mini dice. On the inside cover I used a sharpie to make a chess board, I used some thin sheet magnets, a hole punch and a sharpie to make the chess pieces. (you can do checkers easer) I also found at CVS some super small 1/2" high playing cards that fit in the box for a nice 3+ game kit.

Slingshot = ton of lightweight fun. Good for shelter mice, too.
Carve wooden spoons & butter knives.

Adult beverages make the following go better:

Tell stories, tall tales.
Play word games (only when desperate on rainy days) like Stinky Pinky: (Think of two words that rhyme, give definition, the other(s) have to guess the rhyming words.)
"Guess that band." Sing a phrase of a song, and others guess who performed it. This works really well only with people within 10 years of your age.)
Name things. "Name 5 US rivers that start with the letter "M." etc.
I drew a backgammon board and checkerboard on my CCF pad. Use rocks for pieces.
Sometimes I'll play cards, only if someone else brings them.

You never ran off a tramp? It's pretty fun- You just start screaming, "GIT! GIT ON OUTTA HERE, YOU!" and then start kicking dirt and stuff at them baseball-manager-protest style. Then you have to chase them on foot for, like, 25 yards or so just to make sure they keep going. Then you scream, "AND DON'T COME BACK, YOU HEAR!"

That's how you run off a hobo properly.

Actually you don't have to kick dirt or chase me at all. I don't come back after the first GIT.

I thought hiking was the entertainment??? Does all the fresh air, big blue skies, trees, raindrops, waterfalls, streams, wildlife and lack of sirens, bells, horns make you want for a trail version of wheel of fortune or jeopardy???

Portable Scrabble. If my wife can stay awake long enough. :D

I cannot gush enough about my keychain Scrabble kit (http://www.amazon.com/Mini-Scrabble-Keychain-Basic-Fun/dp/B000P32QWM). I bought it on a lark from a B+N misc. table because, while I don't normally like Scrabble, I do find that it is one of the few games I can get excited about playing. Monopoly and I are so done.

So, I bring my keychain on trips. It takes up about as much space as two of my fingers, side by side, and probably weigh as much, too. Comes with a silvery bag full of letters, and built into the game board are two magnetic letter trays, so you can keep your letters organized and out of sight of your opponent.

If you click the link above, you'll see that there are other keychain games. Since they are made by the same manufacturer, I'd expect that they are similarly well thought out in terms of features and minimization.

I make it a requirement for everyone who goees on trips to bring a mini-entertainment thing because you never know when it will be more attractive to wait out a storm in the tent. For those who need something quickly, I tell them to print and bring a "deck" of mini playing cards (http://www.printmini.com/printables/games/pcards1.shtml).

Depending on were I am hiking I pack a small dual line stunt kite. Otherwise we usually walk from lite to dark (namely because we have to stop every couple minutes to take pictures of this and that/ photography is the wifes hobby so camera equipment takes the place of late nite entertainment )

Offer extra food to thrus! since we sectioners bring too much food. Talk to the thru hikers since we loved their stories. Try to hang a bear bag and entertain the thus by this effort. Thrus teach us how to really hang bear bag. Listen to guitar. Have one drink of libation. Write in my journal. Go to bed early. Get made fun of, obviously, and don't care since everyone was nice. Listen to owls.

Buy a frisbee, drill a small hole exactly in the center and it will serve as a toy, a mouse baffle, and a cutting board. If you buy a small aluminum nut, bolt, washer and rubber washer or grommet to plug the hole with it could also be a dish or shallow bowl. Wash well first .
