I used to use this super-handy Appalachian Trail Distance Calculator, located at http://www.ragtag.org/dbatdist.html but the site just renders an "internal server error" now whenever I try to use it.

Is it me, or is it really down? Is there another calculator anywhere on line? I have looked but all links so far just point to the ragtag site or are also broken...

I don;t get an error, but the distance calculations are not working:

The distance on the Appalachian Trail between
Springer Mountain, GA and
GA60-Woody Gap, GA is
0.0 miles.

You could always try the AT Data Book or any of the three guidebooks. They may be analog, but they're also pretty handy.

Here another site that I use, although it doesn't figure the distance for you and it may be out of date: http://www.thebackpacker.com/trails/at.php

That site provides the same info, but in a different way. I just wanted to know how far it was from Hiawassee to Fontana, which your linked site does, plus it gives shelter locations as well. Very cool. Thanks!

The data in the Backpacker appears to be from 2000 based on the total distance of the trail

If you click two points on this website, it calculates distances. http://www.sophiaknows.com/atdb/weather.php?section=1

It's not an online calculator, but there is a Windows application you can purchase for the extreme price of $11.95 from www.barker-innovations.com (http://www.barker-innovations.com). It uses the 2007 AT Trail Data information....

I use the AT Data Book, but have also put the entire book into an Excel spreadsheet, so I can have it calculate anything I want.
I cannot make this data available online, or otherwise due to its being copyrighted by ATC.

I recently did ask ATC about the possibility of selling an electronic version of the Data Book, but was told that it is a bit of a task, since they would have to work out distribution, etc.
I think he indicated to me that a CD would be more likely than online, since the CD can be sold at outdoor stores, etc, and would be easier to control copyright.
