Who?

George Masa (1881? - June 21 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_21), 1933 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1933)), born Masahara Izuka,[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Masa#cite_note-0) was a Japanese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_people) businessman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Businessman) and professional large format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_format) photographer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photographer). Masa arrived in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) in 1901. In 1915, he settled in Asheville (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asheville), North Carolina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina), where he would spend the final 18 years of his life.

Masa came to love the mountains of Western North Carolina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_North_Carolina) and worked tirelessly for their preservation - at his own expense. Using his photographic equipment and an odometer he crafted from an old bicycle,[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Masa#cite_note-2) Masa meticulously catalogued a significant number of peaks,[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Masa#cite_note-3) the distances between them, and the names given to them by the local settlers and the Cherokee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherokee).[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Masa#cite_note-4) He was a friend of Horace Kephart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horace_Kephart) [6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Masa#cite_note-5) and the two of them worked together to ensure that a large portion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Smoky_Mountains_National_Park) of the Great Smoky Mountains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Smoky_Mountains) would be established as a national park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_park). Masa also scouted and marked the entire North Carolina portion of the Appalachian Trail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appalachian_Trail).[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Masa#cite_note-6)
