I bought a North Face Terra 60 pack...The large says it has 3850ci...i bought it for shorter trips and now planning on thru hiking the AT...Not sure if this pack has enough room. A worker at an backpacking shop said its an ok size pack and other info says i need more than 4000 for an internal frame. ANY suggestions???

does it fit your gear and 5 days worth of food? If it does, it's big enough.

Second what mister krabs. You will be amazed. If you go with a smaller pack you will give up things you didn't think you could and still be fine. 50-60L is fine and seeems to be the norm. No worries.

3850ci is plenty for a thru-hike, unless you are bringing seriously heavy and bulky gear.

My Vapor trail is 3,900 cu/inches and I consider it a bit larger than I need. However, this is one of those areas where HYOH has very real meaning. My gear and 6 days or so of food fit with room to spare, but maybe you wouldn't find that to be the case. As has already been pointed out though, a larger pack lends itself to a larger load when it might not be required.

Thanks all...I got all my gear together and 5-6days of food and everything fit well. I see know that by having this size pack that im forced to take what i need and leave home what i don't.

will it fit your stuff? does your stuff exceed the packs recommended weight? When full is it top heavy?

After a couple of hundred miles you will notice that you will start to carry less and less stuff. I had a pack with 3800 ci and only came close to filling it when I was planning on not stopping for 5-6 days. Just what everyone else says, if your gear fits in it and it fits you and you like it, go for it
