I've never used a tarp as a pack cover, and can't recall seeing anyone else do so.

Why not? I'm carrying it anyway ...

How would you gather it around the pack? What are you doing with excess fabric?

I imagine it would be a PITA to do that when you can easily slip a pack cover over the pack. But then again maybe that's why I am still at 29 pounds for pack weight.

I've sometimes thought of using my silnylon tarp as a pack liner rather than a cover. But I use a plastic bag as a liner instead (I don't use a pack cover), because I'm a little worried about getting everything protected in an all-day soaking rain. I try to pack the tarp over the plastic as a kind of second layer of protection.

A pack cover can be replaced year by year due to trail rippings and hole pokings. A tarp would get shredded over time, and I suppose it has to perform dual purpose in camp as either a shelter or a ground cloth??
