All right;

Where do you want to spend the night?
Uncle Johnnys [some hot foods]:-? or
Nolichucky Gorge Campground [a restaurant].:p

Which ever I decide, I will visit both while I'm in the neighborhood.

There are pros and cons to each.

Uncle Johnny has a reputation of nickle and diming hikers that stay there. But, you get a bunk, a dry place to hang out. Everyone in Erwin knows how to get to Johnny's, so hitching in and out of town is pretty easy.

Campground is cheaper in the long run, but further from town, and sometimes harder to hitch back to. You are basically paying to camp out in the weather. If possible, you might consider just hiking a mile or two out of town and stay at a campsite or shelter on the trail for free.

Riverbend Motel...the water pressure is so high you won't need soap. They gave me a ride back to the trail in the morning...no charge. The room was very comfortable. I enjoyed my stay and it cost less than the Holiday inn. Not that I have anything against the Holiday Inn. I've stayed at many of them.:)

How about on the trail? I've heard there is one nearby.

Huummmm....I have stayed at Uncle Johnny's 3 times and never had a problem. I would recommend it and go again.

Just don't catch him on a bad day, as he seems to forget he runs a hospitality business.

Johnny's can get quite crowded. Though Johnny's does a small outfitter supply and offers private rustic rooms.

Only walked into the campground once. It does not get as much traffic since most most people see Johnny's first. It has a small hostel and campground ammenities. Then sits next to the rafting companies.

Really the campground and Johnnys are only a short walk apart. Maybe 20 minutes. So if people say its too far from town, thats a laugh. The campground is only a mile from Johnny's going up Jones Branch Road.

If its in the peak of the season, dont go to Johnny's. Its really loud and lots of partying. Most everyone that didnt stay there stayed at Holiday Inn or campground.

Best Southern had $20 a person rooms a couple of years ago.
