"Slick muddy spot" describes most of the AT through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park after snow or rain. I slipped, sled, and fell a good bit myself. Sad to hear of a death.

This is not to be insensitive to a senseless loss...

I can think of worse places and ways to go.

I hope he was in heaven a couple hours before the devil knew he was dead, and I hope I have the right stuff at 73

Well said. 73 is too young to die, but it is good to go out doing what you like to do.

perhaps he died doing what he loved best?

or perhaps at the moment of the slip, he was thinking curse this trail and mud. what am i doing out here?

always sad to lose brethren of such ripe old age
