HA!, I hate it when I do that, especially when it wakes me up.

One thing I did notice on my limited walk was 90% of ALL people snore.
Even the petite gals.

A German gal use to shake people to tell them they are snorring and it pissed a few off. A guy named 2 dogs blurted out after she clued him in,
"YA!, it means I'm sleeping" we all thought that was funny.

Ha! Sly's got it right on with both.

Total newbie hikers who think they know everything about gear and hiking. coughminnesotacoughsmithin2006cough. Excuse me.

Gear nerds who go on about "you could save 0.23532 oz by doing x..."

Hikers who think they're a badass or entitled to special treatment. Get over yourself: It's just walking.

Fundamentalism of any sort. Especially religious.

Not sure how one could legally enforce any of this though... :-?

Should I conceal my pot smoking more than say cigarette smoking in the woods? Personally I would never smoke a cig let alone pot in an enclosed area with non smokers, out of respect... But in the open woods, why should I be more covert with pot than cigs? It is less harmful to secondary participants, and it affects only the users experience... My simple rule of thumb, my rights end at your nose..

I think it could be a mix of both. Some of the hikers that come into traildays seem to walk out with some new stuff. Also, have you ever noticed that when hikers leave north outta Damascus, some new people are out and just seem to have "decided" to hit the trail. There is always a new pack of people that jump on after the festival. I mean,I really doubt that locals would do it unless there are some dumba#* kids that just wanna mess up things for some hikers.

i could see if you were already smoking when I got there then it's entirely my problem---OK I avoid you/the area until the air clears but if I'm there and clearly not doing it then why is it you don't ask first. Maybe I'm being a pu$$y about it but it does seem to be just basic manners to me ask and find out if I mind before you light up on me. I should not have to wear a medic alert braclet for an illegal substance or should I?

No you shouldn't. But I guess pot is like guns on the AT. We know it's illegal to carry it the whole way, but select groups still do. Most are respectful and keep it tucked away, the occasional few like to flaunt it.

I would possible make phrases like horse phooey illegal to NOT say. Perhaps going so far as to place a daily quota on the number of times daily in which the good citizen would be required to find appropriate recourse to exclaim said exclamation.

other sayings that will be mandatory:

If your looking for peace and quite, then why would you choose to hike the AT or any established heavily traveled trail? There are millions of acres of forest all over north america, so regardless of where you live, you must be able to find a patch of forest with no crowds...

I love the AT and trail walking in general, but do the majority of my hiking off the beaten path for the same reason you mention...

If you want peace and quite, stay off trails.

they don't. it's other hikers that traveled up from georgia
I realize that thieves can be from most anywhere but the thieves I heard about (from the police) that where caught were non hikers from outside the Damascus area, near Bristol. Becuase of incidents over the past few years I don't go to the parade anymore but rather stay back and watch the area our group is set up in in the campground. Last year I saw three young boys 17-21 (non-hikers) snooping thru the campground during the parade and I told the police. They caught the trio and after interviewing them promptly escorted them to the gate. I think the idea of registering everyone that is staying in the campground and requiring them wear a wristband is a good idea and that it helped decrease the chances or incidents of theft. I think the police should take it a step futher and require all hikers to show the band upon entering and leaving the campground. Any guest visiting hikers in the campground should have to register and wear a different color band as this may also help. But again for those who plan to stay in the campground all I can say is watch your gear as there are back ways into that campground and easy opportunities for thieves.

A Texas farm wife called the local phone company to report her telephone failed to ring when her friends called - and that on the few occasions when it did ring, her dog always moaned right before the phone
rang.
The telephone repairman proceeded to the scene, curious to see this psychic dog or senile lady. He climbed a telephone pole, hooked in his test set, and dialed the subscriber's house. The phone didn't ring right away, but then the dog moaned and the telephone began to ring. Climbing down from the pole, the telephone repairman found:

1. The dog was tied to the telephone system's ground wire via a steel chain and collar.
2. The wire connection to the ground rod was loose.
3. The dog was receiving 90 volts of signaling current when the number was called.
4. After a couple of jolts, the dog would start moaning and then urinate.
5. The wet ground would complete the circuit, thus causing the phone to ring.
This just demonstrates that some problems CAN be fixed by pissing and moaning.

What I really hate running across are groups of any kind.....church groups, boy scout groups, women's empowerment groups, llama treker groups, youth leadership school groups, the Sierra Club, corporate team-building groups, at risk kids groups, survivalist groups, singles clubs hiking groups, etc. I know that I have just managed to offend thousands of people, but I go to the woods for peace and quiet, and groups are never quiet.....unless they are Trappist monks.

At risk kids groups. Ran into a group of these jagoffs in Ricket Glen in Pa. Thugs in the woods talking all gangster running there mouth. I couldn't help it had to remind them i got to go home when I got done hiking not back to lock up like them.

ANYONE leaving abandoned coolers, and full cases of water bottles at trailheads for hikers. I don't care if they SAY they are coming back to clean it up later, BUST EM!

That's not magic, it's litter at AT parking areas, plain and simple.

Also should be included, the main reason for the problem.........
Any hiker that uses abandoned water stashes at trailheads, should carry any bottles they use from that point, until they can be disposed of properly.

You pick it up, it's yours, or you pay a fine too. :-?

Although it's looking like a wet year, we are still recovering from a drought. There are still long stretches on the AT where these roadside caches are your only chance to rehydrate. Leaving beverages by trailheads is magic and if the providers clean it up it is not littering. Please see State vs. Arlo Guthrie in the case of the Alices Restaurant Thanksgiving Day Masacree.

dogs.

Now I know there are like 6 responsible dog owners who have well trained dogs that don't bark at everything and don't stay in shelters and pick up the dog poo, and they're probably on this forum and I'd hate to have to ruin it for them but seriously, most dog owners suck.

Shelters should be illegal

I was reading an online AT journal the other day and was really ticked when the writer described people defecating on the ground 15 feet behind the shelter and making no effort to get back in the trees or even bury it. Someone stepped in it while brushing their teeth and another hiker accidently layed their pack down in a pile. So, having read that, I think inconsiderate fools should be banned from the trail!!!

50% of all hikers who shot at a bear with a gun were attacked. 0% of all hikers who used pepper spray at a bear were attacked, according to black bear research.

Had a group pass me with 2 german shepard trained guard dogs. Snarling at the end of their leash at me while passing. If people are that paranoid about walking in the woods they shouldn't be there imo.

Even my dog Max snores.

Many, if not most, of the people who start the AT do so well outside their comfort zone. They barely leave the trail to relieve themselves lest they get helplessly lost and die alone in the wilderness. In continuance the same folks huddle in the shelters for security. They are so insecure that they won't go a reasonable distance from the shelter to go. Any tent sites near a shelter are covered with urine because those pilgrams won't walk more than a few steps from their tent. It's all a bunch of poo and yet another reason to stealth camp.:-?
