View Full Version : Please Critique My Gear List

Well after reading gear lists upon gear lists I figured I would actually post mine up. I’ve tried to approach my upcoming section hike as if it was a thru hike with as few exception as possible (notably carrying a 30 degree bag versus a 15 or 20). I’m open to any critiques or areas where you see possible improvement opportunities. Thanks so much!

I'm not good at going over gear lists but thanks for posting. It reminded me that I need to add my Zyrtec. I leave tomorrow and would have been miserable without it.

Have fun on your hike

Hard to critique without knowing what your trying to accomplish. At first glance id say loose the water filter and replacing with aqua mira. You could try replacing your boots with shoes.

i don't personally think a compass is that necessary since the AT is well marked. i have never used one on the AT. . .but that is also a personal comfort issue.

I've been debating that one... I might leave it

Looks pretty good. Some observations:

long pants
bandana/buff
hand sanitizer
lighter
ear plugs
duct tape
whistle
maybe leave bowl home and eat out of pot
only need a utensil not utensils
various stuff sacks including one for food
sunscreen
deet
pencil
notebook

See you on the trail,

Ditsch the pillow and use you clothing bag and jacket as a pillow, ditch the bowl and use your pot. You can mix beverages in you nalgene or water bottle. Also, ditch the multitool, i used one and threw it out later. Just get a decent knife, small, compact. You most def will not need a compass if you will be on the AT

Get three lighters, wrap duct tape around them.
Hand sani is key to avoid sickness. Like Squid said, you will want some sort of bandana.
Walmart has a three stuff sack deal. I got one in TN and carried it all the way and still use it today.

The ear plugs are open to debate. Just depends on the person

I have a lighter in my first aid kit... forgot to include it there.

The bandanna is a good idea. I'm also bringing an iPod at 1.5 ozs

Always seem to have duct tape turn up in hiker boxes when you need to replenish it

The sleeping bag rating depends how far, when and where along the trail. I started with a 30 degree sleeping bag on Springer Mountain on February 28, 1999. It got down to 10 degrees my forth night out. When I got to Walesi Yi, I bought a 0 degree bag. I was never cold again until I finished my section hike in VA. And ear plugs are essential if you sleep in a shelter full of snoring people.
