Is windows 7 any good? I heard the beta was more stable than the final version of Vista.

absitively! windows 7 is awesome... i killed my vista install and advise all to avoid that reincarnation of win/me

Currently use Ubuntu - nice and easy. You install it, make a few easy tweaks and it works like an operating system should work. Been a Linux user since Red Hat 5.1. I have one small install of XP on my laptop for occasional use with a couple of programs I use at work, desktop is 100% Ubuntu!!!

XPP really isn't so awful, but win7 is surprisingly fast and slick. All the initial problems I had were more with IE8. Now I only run firefox on win7.
If more folks converted to ubuntu, more windows software would have a native ubuntu version. But then the viruses, spyware and malware would be sure to follow. I recently added wine for windows programs, but haven't tested too many programs there.
