Does anyone know where this (http://www.whiteblaze.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/3715/password/0/sort/1/cat/500/page/1) sign is ? I will post answer in a few days if no one guesses correctly.

Not this one. I suppose there could be another somewhere. A clue: Earl might guess, but probably no thru-hiker since. I was curious to see if anyone might have seen this sign.

Near Mt Oglethorpe

No, but good guess. Gene Espy started at Oglethorpe, but I'm not sure if he passed on, or near, this spot.

This answer isn't as fair as eyeballing it, but it's in with your Virginia pics Groucho, and the next pic is Whitetop mountain. So I'd guess SW Virginia. But exactly where, I have no clue.

Fair enough, but no cigar. You are close though. It is in SW VA. I may have misled by saying Earl might guess; he might, but he actually went by here or very near here. For that matter Andy Griffith might have passed this way, by car probably. It is near Mayberry.

PILOT mountain?
No, but you can see the Pilot from near here. Earl did.

Couldn't wait. The sign is just S of the crest at Fancy Gap in VA on Route 52. It is N of Mt. Airy on that route.

Earl Shaffer should have walked here, or near here, when he had to road walk through Galax to the BRP before climbing the Pinnacles of Dan.

Edit: This picture (http://www.whiteblaze.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/3720/password/0/sort/1/cat/500/page/1) shows location.

OK, I don't know when this thread was started, but I'm takin' a guess before a scroll down and see if the answer is already posted. I'm gonna guess the short road section on the north side (relative to AT) of Hanover, NH.....the area close to where there's a perguine falcon nesting area......am I right?
