My son, Michael Harper, just left today from the Georgia end! If anybody sees or talks to him, tell him his Mom says, "Keep Going and have a BLAST!":banana

Good job mom! With this kind of support your son will go far.. And not just on the AT!

What a great attitude! It's refreshing to see so much family support. So....when you gett'in out there Mom?....with that attitude it seems that you want to go too.:)

The day before I left I overheard my mom telling someone "He doesn't know what he's doing, he'll be back in 3 days..."

Your son's a lucky guy.

Yeah, I agree.. very cool mom. My mother is actually some-what non-supportive of my planned 2010 thru-hike. It's kinda disappointing, but I know it's just worries. Hopefully she'll come around.

I totally supported my son when he told me he bought a ticket to Spain and was going the backpack the country and hostel hop. He had a blast and is going to do it again in France and Italy. As a Mom it is what we do, raise them and boot them from the nest and hope they fly. Mine is flying great.

My mom climbed Mt. K in the 1930s and thinks hiking is top-shelf.

When I read the journal my Dad kept of our Long Trail hikes, he always gave Mom credit for the drop-off and pick-up (usually with a cold beer). Go Moms!

Just before my Mom became unable to talk due to a series of strokes, before she died she asked me, "you are going to do the Trail, right?" I said yes. She gave me a long look and a wink and she said "you'll make it." Thanks Moms everywhere, it's getting close to Mother's Day so if your Mom's around give her a hug and tell her you love her.

Hey, now. It's pretty much universally accepted that my mom ("Jesters Mom" on whiteblaze) is the coolest mom ever.

But HikersMom21 is pretty cool.

I'm planning a trip to the A.T. for a thru hike but having second thoughts about leaving family for that long. Its been a dream of mine as long as i can remember. I have kids so its a tough decision do I make the trip and miss the time with family or wait and maybe miss the time on the trail????????

She turned 86 last Friday and can still kick my butt.......:o:o
She and my wife have always supported my hiking. I'm a blessed guy.

My Mom grew up a few miles from the AT, and while she's cool with me going hiking, she doesn't quite understand why one would do so for sport - walking over/between mountains was just "getting around" for her as a child!

Depends on how old the kids are. If younger I'd do sections for now and take them if you can. If college age and older, maybe it can work out. I did it with my 16 yr old in '07.

My Mother says do what you want to do and do it while you are young and able. Live your own life and donīt regret what you didnīt do when you could.
