There are no dumb questions.
A Platypus is a water "bladder." Similar to CamelBak, etc.

It's great to have, too, by the way. :)
It's also the only mammal that lays eggs. Also one of the few that is venomous.
They also make good collapsible water bottles if you don't like using it as a hydration system. Lighter than Nalgene, take up very little room when empty. A great option for "extra" capacity for when the spring is a long way from shelter/camp.
