How long do you have to hike?

Start at Harpers Ferry and go north. If you have time to do the whole thing you can then flip flop.

If I had a month, I would probably start somewhere a bit more spectacular than in the Mid Atlantic - no offense. Either South or North farther would offer more interesting hiking - south would be HOT. A month will give you time to get your trail legs and enjoy a challenging hike. Personally I would probably start in Vermont.

Hiking South is cool cuz most people hike North. Sounds strange, but you get to meet a ton more people that way. I really like the smokies, depending on how fast you hike you can start off in Hot springs and head south or maybe even start farther north. The Hike south out of Hot springs wasn't much to look at. To be honest all the way to 40 you only have a few decent spots, but once you cross 40 it is awesome.

If I had a Month, I'd hike North from Harper's Ferry, and blue blaze to everything interesting.

If I had a Month and plenty of money and was 20, I'd sail and loaf around in the Dry Tortugas with a cute first mate.

If.....:-?

Since you're from northern NJ, why not just start at the closest trailhead to your home and hike north. The logistics would be easy, and the progressive weather through the area should be good - following the end of spring into summer.

Don't forget, the higher elevations would not be as hot. Including the Smokies would get you out of the hot weather.

Well, start at the beginning. Then go through the middle parts, and end at the end.
