It looks like anyone staying in the backcountry in RMNP is going to need a bear canister now.

I went up there for a few days last year, two nights in backcountry and two in a campground. The ranger that issued my permit said they had three bears in the park. I saw no evidence of a bear until I got to the campground. One was hanging around to see if it could pick up scraps I guess.

Maybe they've had more move in....

I admit it been a few years since I was there, but there were almost no bears in the park around 8 years ago. I almost think the bear canister manufacturers have a lobby with the NPS or something. :-?

Easier just to say "BRING A CANISTER". The thought of needing a canister in high alpine areas (e.g. the Boulder Field) where bears are not likely is laughable.

More gov't nanny state-ism! :)
