Do you think i need to get the thru-hikers companion and/or a 2009 data book for 09 MEGA? or can I get by with just a 2004 data book on the trail?

Databooks are so cheap, no need to hike with a 2004 version. As for trailguides, doesn't really matter which one you get or if you don't get one at all, but if you do get one there's no need for the databook on the trail. All guide books copy info from the datatbook, then add to that.

You can get by, but it'll be more difficult than if you have the Companion, or similar. Just about all other hikers will have a guidebook, which gives the names of hostels and motels and outfitters, small town maps showing where the grocery stores are, etc. If you don't have one, you'll be constantly trying to get the information from other hikers.

A couple of the SOBOs who started near me in '06 didn't have guidebooks. They soon bought them. If you get it before the hike, it will answer lots of your questions about the logisitics of beginning the hike.

Buy a new DataBook, yes the Companion and other trail updates are onn the ATC site, and the 2009 Companion can be viewed for free on the ALDHA site. Use the Companion for planning, the DataBook when hiking.

I'd get the updated version. Or download the 2009 ADHLA companion for free and take what pages you need. There have been reroutes and changes with town services since 2004.
