View Full Version : "Cobalt Blue Solo" for 3" pots

I perfected a low pressure, top jetted stove that works great for small pot, mugs, and heineken pots. The flames stay right under the pot where we all want them to stay. The stove is made of a double walled aluminum beverage bottle and stainless steel for the integrated pot stand.

I decreased the basic Cobalt body height and increased the pot stand height and added a fiberglass sleeve between pot stand and stove body to prevent fuel from being captured between the two. Initially the fuel was being super heated and would occasionally "pop" as the stove was being used. The sleeve has corrected that. There is fiberglass cloth between the two walls of the stove to aid in almost instantanious bloom.
I'm consistantly getting 2 cups of 70 degree water to boil using 3/4 ounce of Heet(yellow) fuel. Time is around the 8.5 min average with flame out being around 9.5 min or so. The tests were with a covered heineken pot. The enclosed photos show the flame pattern. The stove is top jetted with fewer jets from the original count.

Stove height is 2" and max fuel capacity is 1.5 ounces.
It weighs 1 oz. and is super durable. (think "tank" tough):D

I named it "Cobalt Blue Solo"

Thanks Foyt20.
Oh Yes!!!! you gotta love Denatured Alcohol. I did 6 test burn this evening using denatured. 2 cups 65 degree water boiled on average of 7.75 min. and continued to burn for 1 more min.

I did one test using 91 percent isopropyl alcohol. 3/4 ounce boiled 2 cups in 8.5 min and continued to burn for an additional 3 min. I should be able to get the boil with 1/2 ounce. The Cobalt Blue has turned out to be a super stove.:)

Today I did a cold water/pot test to determine the effect on the flame of the stove. Shortly after the stove is lit the cold pot (35 degree water in it) is placed on the stove. No visual reduction was seen. Success!!!!

2 cups of 35 degree water boiled in 11 min.

Total burn time for 1.5 ounces of fuel was 22 min.

Because the stove is "top jetted" I was able to make the Cobalt Blue simmer by using an aluminum ring placed over the stove as shown in the video. It weighs 1 ounce, has integrated pot stand, burns denatured alcohol and HEET (yelllow) and is able to simmer. I've had a few PM's asking about the availability of the stove. I should have some made available on ebay by tomorrow.

looks similar to the build design of the fancie feast

Yes it does. The fancee feest is one of the best designs, very dependable stove. The Cobalt Blue has the tiny jets that make the stove unique in it's operation. Top Jetted pop can stoves is what started the use of alcohol in backpacking. The tiny jets to hikers are like what light is to moths ;). These are easy build them yourself designs.

Here is an easy way to roll that edge over.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d82VZ5-No5k

yaduck9, hold off until next month. Set one of those 20's aside for a CB.

This stove is really great for 3" diameter pots/mugs. Everybody has been asking for this type of stove so I came up with a way to make this bottle stove work. It's super tough and small enough to fit inside your pots and mugs.

Everyone needs to at least try and make their own according to the instructions on folding the edge over. The rest of the stove make it like a Fancee Feest. The instructions are found here in this forum somewhere. Look for the frolicking bananas:banana at the beggining of the threads.

Nice design, glad to see I am not the only one who likes the bud light bottles lol. 11 minutes for 2 cups to a boil seems really long, mine does 2 cups in 4:33.

Try yours on a beer can pot and see how that works out for you.

I would also take a wild guess that your stove will use twice the fuel to get that 4:33 boil. TANSTAAFL.

It took 11 min. The starting temperature of the water was 35 degrees

Supercat stoves boil 2 cups in 4:33. They are one piece cat food cans:banana

I forget, what was the function of the washer? Do you have to prime it and how much fuel used to prime it?

watched the videos for making the stove, just one question, how did you get wick in between the stove walls, i assume you line the can before you press it into the double wall design?

also, other than being a one piece stove, how is this design different from a normal pepsi can double wall pressurized stove? might be a dumb question, but they seem fairly similar in design and function.

You're correct, no different than a normal pepsi can stove. Correct another time on the line the can before compressing. Keep us informed on your progress. It's a fun project.

With the stand being so high it does not like it would be stable out in the field.

With the stand being so high it does not like it would be stable out in the field.

The blue part of the stove is 1" high and the stainless steel part is 1" high.

Total height of the stove is 2" Is that still too high for you?

The stove is furnished with an aluminum heat reflecting pad to firm up the soil before setting the stove down when out in the field.

The stove is really working well for everone that has ordered one.

If you'ld like to order one send me a PM.

MDhiker1967 and Allen1901:-?

My stoves are user friendly. No loose parts. Pour the fuel in and away you go.

The Cobalt Blue works great with the Heineken and Fosters beer can pots and the vast majority of Titanium mugs/pots of small diameters. You'll love this little stove for it's simplicity of use and quality craftsmanship. Money back guarantee, not satisfied for any reason just ship it on back.

I thought you already purchased one. You have one of every stove I've ever had for sale. I won't tell Tinny that. That's just between you and I. I know MDhiker1967 is chompin at the bit just eager as all get out to save up enough money to get the Cobalt Blue. Best stove out there for small pots and trouble free cold weather starting. Watch the videos.

Sorry, I don't trust Dan with my credit card or pay pal info.

The Grease Pot and 40 oz mug are doing fine. I insulated the handles with silicon, and built a lid for the 40 oz mug from the lid off of a can of Gatorade powder.

I hope You and Your Family are doing well Russ!

Family is doing great. Wife and I are getting a dog this week. She wants the protection (companion?) for when I am gone backpacking.

Hydraulic bottle jack, screw type jack. Might try a 2 pound hammer, put a 1/4 plate over the top of the bottle as shown in the video and carefully pound the center of the plate. Hit it so it compresses about 1/16" per pound. DIY'ers have plenty of time, take your time.

Is there an easy way to put out these stoves? Lately, at least in the warm weather, my water boils long before the fuel in the stove runs out. It'd be nice to snuff out the stove somehow, and reclaim the unused fuel.

You can cut 2" off the bottom of a 12 oz. Redbull can or any Anheuser-Busch "Slimline" can. That should snuff it pretty easily.

I got the stove 30 minutes ago. I am doing test burns right now. First boil with a Heini chopped pot. 2 cups 64 degree water, 1 oz DA, boil 7 minutes. Total burn 13 minutes.
My second boil, Aluminum cup, 2 cups 64 degree water, 3/4 oz DA, 7 minutes, total burn 10 minutes.
Third boil Heini chopped pot. 2 cups 64 degree water, 1/2 oz DA, boil 7 minutes. Total burn 8 minutes.
Last test update. K-mart Grease pot. 2 cups 64 degree water, 1/2 oz DA, boil 6 minutes. Total burn 8 minutes.
All times approximate. Stove tested in my kitchen.

I like how the stove blooms immediately. The boils at 6 & 7 minutes were big rolling boils too. Super design, A great flame pattern for small pots. The stove looks very durable and well built. I am very happy. I like the windscreen also. You da man.
Great stove Dan,
