Duncannon's annual Community Day, sponsored by Duncannon Area Revitalization, will include a celebration of the Appalachian Trail, which goes through downtown Duncannon.

National Trails Day was already celebrated nationally, but will be part of the borough's celebration on Saturday.

"Trail Magic Galore" will be theme of the daylong event.

"We thought we would do some trail-related things on this day, even though Trails Day is celebrated nationally on June 5," public relations coordinator Lynne Mitchell said.

The event will include a treasure walk, in which participants locate architectural designs in the area of Market and High streets to compete for prizes donated by businesses. Trail journalist Steve Fehr of Duncannon took photos of the architecture to assist players in the game.

The Appalachian Trail White Blazes Trivia Contest involves the counting of trail blazes, white markings designating the course of the Appalachian Trail, through Duncannon and Penn Twp.

Registration for both contests will be at Cumberland and High streets.

The Duncannon Gentle Ladies Garden Club will hold a white elephant sale in a lot just southwest of the square. Club President Nanci Lycett said profits would be used to put a garden on that lot in the fall.

Also in the area of Cumberland and High streets, Duncannon Fire Company members will sell refreshments and will wash cars. Commemorative wooden nickels for the event will be issued throughout the day.

Darlene and Kent Johnson's Gangway Pet Products and Dog Training Center at 1 S. Market St. will sponsor a pet contest for children and their dogs starting at 10 a.m.

"We will have contests for the best-dressed, best trick, largest and smallest dog, look-alike dog and owner, longest tail wag and best kisser," Darlene Johnson said. "We look forward to doing this. I think it will be a lot of fun."

All other festivities, including a townwide yard sale, will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
