You need a spot in the poll for neither. I choose to not carry either, although I generally hike in Grizzly country. Too low risk to justify it. In Glacier NP I'd conside spray.

Hey that's smart. Hike with someone you know you can out run and the bear or whatever will get them while you make your getaway. Now why didn't I think of that?

In the late 1980's I bowhunted for elk/black bear south of Glacier NP in the Kootnai NF and at the advise of our outfitter who dropped us off and left us a week in swamp creek canyon, I wore a .44 mag. handgun the entire time because he told us where we were was where they drop the problem grizzleys from Glacier NP. I don't know if it was true or not but it kept us alert. That "hog leg" I was wearing dragged me down on one side really bad. Never saw a bear or elk for that matter.

Just because you carry some form of protection doesn't mean you're "afraid." Just careful/cautious/prepared, some may even say smart.

And that applies where the protection is a gun, pepperspray or condoms...

now that's the right attitude! if i never have to let anyone know what i carry, then i've had a good day. i'm very comfortable with my safety situation. i'll leave it at that. ;)

i agree with this statement completely. people have asked me if i'm really that scared of things or people in the woods, and i ask them "are you really that scared that you'll take a fall or get a blister? why do you carry your first aid kit?" the answer i usually get is "no, i'm just prepared for a possible situation" i confidently answer, "well now you've answered your original question." i've had the conversation a few times already.

Good thinking!

As to being scared, I hoped the poll was a little tongue-in-cheek. Don't take it so seriously- you might end up on a little of right-wing extremists!

Actually, I'd think you'd be most likely to need bear spray to fend of some thru-hiker's unruly dog...

22!! Maybe for a lunatic person. But not for a enraged bear.

Sure it does, and maybe even a felon.
