The plan is to leave Damascus on the 1st of September and hike for two months. This should put me somewhere near New York by the 1st of November. At what point would it be adviseable to change back to cold weather gear?

Also, will water be an issue this time of year? Please feel free to provide any other info that would be pertinant to hiking this late in the season.

I would start out with some reasonably warm gear. Say suitable down to the 30's. Your bound to have some cold nights, even that far south. Throw in some cold rain, or even an early season snow flurry or two and you'd be glad to have it. Problems finding water? Thats really hard to say, too many variables to know.

Given the shorter days that time of year and the fact SW and central VA is a lot harder than you might think (I just finished that section), my guess is you'll be lucky to get to the DWG in 60 days. But thats only a guess. Maybe your a fast and strong hiker.
