Other than the Springer plaque and Katahdin sign, what do you think is the most photographed location on the AT by hikers?

I'm thinking it's McAfee Knob !!!

Also, what trail personality is most sought out to get a photo taken? Baltimore Jack, Bob Peoples????

Got to be McAfee knob (other than the big K). A funny story of when I hiked that section: One of the guys in our group was so tired that when he got to McAfee he did not even stop to look but just kept on going.... Now that is dark.

Noun1.hiker - a foot traveler; someone who goes on an extended walk (for pleasure)

If the question is a location photographed by a person that got there by walking, then probably Clingmans Dome. Second would be another GSMNP location like Spence Field, Andrews Bald, or the Mt. Cammerer tower. We're talking the most visited National Park in the country, and some neat overlook in some Virginia National Forest or State Park will not get nearly the visitors.

If the OP's definition of "hiker" is anyone who casually walks to a point - any point - on the Trail, then I can understand the respondants who said Mt. Washington or Newfound Gap & Clingman's Dome. As pointed out, the latter lies in the most visited NP in the US.

So I would add Bear Mountain, NY because hordes of New Yorkers and New Jerseyites descend there in the summer for day trips and picnics. Also, many tourists come to Harpers Ferry and (likely inadvertently) take photos of the Trail.

Now if we're talking thru or long-distance or less-than-casual hikers, then my first instinct, as others have said, is McAfee Knob.

Damascus' Appalachian Trail sign is perhaps the most easily recognizable and most photographed man-made object along the entire 2,160 miles of the trail's length. Virtually every time a group of hikers pays Damascus a visit, you'll find a couple of them having their picture taken with this rustic sign!

Although you could present a good case for other places being more photogenic, there are about 250,000 people who visit the summit of Mount Washington each year. Of that number about 60,000 are actual hikers and I'm willing to bet a lot of those hikers are snapping pictures. Unless you can show that any of the other spots mentioned gets anywhere near that sort of hiker traffic, Mount Washington would be way out in front for the most photographed spot by hikers.

If you want to restrict the meaning of "hiker" to only refer to thru-hikers (smacks of elitism ;)), the start and finish and possibly the ATC headquarters (just off the trail) would be right up there.

By AT hikers I would agree. "On the AT", I would think NFG. Bus after bus after bus unload at Newfound Gap.

1.) Somebody has to put a blaze on that sign.
2.) Ok, here's a great purist argument. Which part of that walkway is the trail? The left side, or the right side? Or is it the right side for northbounders, and the left side for southbounders?:D

Most of my personal AT photos were taken in the Roan highlands, so that's a biased answer. I've got to at least say Carver's Gap; though by tourists, not hikers.

I have read that the most traveled portion of the AT is the CT section. If that is true my vote would have to be the pyramid at the summit of Bear Mountain.

Two of the most photographed by thru-hikers, excluding the Springer and Katahdin summits, are probably the Kennebec canoe ferry and the view of Katahdin from Abol Bridge.

Non-hikers: Most visited National Park is GSMNP. Most visited spot on the ridgeline is Newfound Gap. Just to reiterate what others have said.

Hikers: I think it would be statistically more interesting to say "what spot is the most photographed by percentage of people that see it?" I have the answer - the ATC sign at HQ in Harper's Ferry. I arrest my case. At least 95% of thru hikers get their picture at ATC HQ.
