I'd like to get in a hike in the cohutta wilderness over a 3 day weekend. Start and finish at the car with as little backtracking as possible, with a loop being ideal.
I'd like to include a good bit of river walking like the Jacks or Conasauga river trails. It will be June and probably hot. I think being by the river will be nice. Any part of a loop that would include more water would be preferred. Balancing loop vs water, what do you think of this route? chestnut:conasauga:hickory creek:cowpen:panther creek:conasauga:chestnut.

Never been there and open to all suggestions. Also, what would be the best place for maps of cohutta?

I'm at work, so I can't look at a map at the moment. The Cohutta Wilderness is a really cool place. With so many trails, you can pretty much plan loops for any length without much trouble.

As for maps, the one I have is a National Geographic map. It's #781 (Tellico and Ocoee Rivers Trail Map). It includes the Cohutta Wilderness and the Big Frog Wilderness area as well. Here's a link to the map: http://bit.ly/EVrvx

You should also pick up the book "Hiking Trails of the Cohutta and Big Frog Wildernesses". It contains a lot of good information. For completeness, here's a link to the book at Amazon: http://bit.ly/keeIE

Have fun. The Cohutta Wilderness is a fun place to get away.

The Cohutta gurus are on this site:

They know all the parking spots, loops, trails and everything else. Get onto their forum and start reading.

I bought both the map and book in REI Atlanta a few years ago.

I've often thought of bringing my flyrod along on a Cohutta hiking trip. Do the trail(s) run near the river, and are there opportunities for both fishing and hiking?
